## My actual shortlist, in order **1. Fortinet FortiGate 50G / 70G** - my default recommendation for most small businesses with 10-75 people. Best price-to-performance in the category, SD-WAN and IPS/IPSec VPN included rather than nickel-and-dimed, and the FortiOS ecosystem means you can add FortiAP access points and FortiSwitch later and manage it all from one pane. Expect roughly $500-1,000 for the box plus an annual UTP/UTM bundle. Downside: FortiOS has a real learning curve, and Fortinet has had a rough run of CVEs in SSL-VPN specifically - patch promptly and don't expose SSL-VPN if you can use IPsec instead. ([comparison](https://www.esecurityplanet.com/products/sophos-xg-vs-fortinet-fortigate/)) **2. UniFi Cloud Gateway (UCG-Max, UCG-Fiber, or Dream Machine Pro) - Ubiquiti** - the value pick, and what I'd choose for a business under ~30 people that also needs Wi-Fi and switching. There is no subscription at all: IDS/IPS and the threat feeds are included in the purchase price, typically $199-$499. The tradeoff is that the security engine is genuinely weaker than Fortinet's or Palo Alto's, and support is community-forum-grade. If your risk profile is "coffee shop, dental office, design studio," that's an acceptable trade. If you handle regulated data, it isn't. **3. Netgate appliances running pfSense Plus (2100, 4200, 6100)** - the right answer if you have someone technical on staff or a competent MSP, and you're tired of per-feature licensing. The 4200 is about $549-$599 and gives you a fully capable router/firewall/VPN with no feature gates. Enormously flexible, excellent OpenVPN/WireGuard support. It is not a next-gen firewall out of the box, though - deep inspection and app control require bolting on Suricata and pfBlockerNG yourself. ([Netgate 4200](https://shop.netgate.com/products/netgate-4200-base-pfsense-security-gateway), [Netgate's own SMB writeup](https://netgate.com/blog/best-firewalls-for-small-businesses)) **4. Sophos XGS 88 / XGS 116** - the one I'd name for a business with *no* IT person. The management UI is the friendliest in the category by a wide margin, pricing undercuts Fortinet at the enterprise tiers, and the Sophos Central cloud console plus endpoint "Synchronized Security" integration is genuinely useful if you're also buying Sophos endpoint protection. Very commonly deployed by MSPs for exactly this reason. ([comparison](https://www.esecurityplanet.com/products/sophos-xg-vs-fortinet-fortigate/)) **5. Firewalla Gold SE / Gold Pro** - for micro-businesses, home offices, and 1-10 person shops. $189-$500ish, lifetime updates with no subscription, managed from a phone app, and surprisingly good at egress/outbound control and device-level visibility. It is not an enterprise NGFW and I wouldn't put it in front of a 50-person office, but it massively outperforms the ISP-supplied router it would replace. ([business.org review](https://www.business.org/it/cyber-security/data-security-tips-for-protecting-your-small-business/)) **6. Palo Alto PA-410 / PA-415** - if security effectiveness is the priority and budget is secondary. Best-in-class App-ID and threat prevention, consistently top-tier in independent testing. You will pay noticeably more per seat than Fortinet for the hardware and the subscriptions, and it's overkill for a small office unless you're in finance, healthcare, or legal. ([overview](https://meter.com/resources/best-firewall-for-small-business)) **7. Cisco Meraki MX67 / MX68** - only if you have multiple sites and want zero on-site administration. Cloud-managed, dead simple, excellent multi-site VPN mesh. The catch is severe: the hardware is a brick without an active license, and renewals are expensive. Buy it for the operational model, not the price. ## One thing I'd flag I'd be cautious about **SonicWall TZ** right now, even though it shows up on nearly every "best SMB firewall" list and the hardware is fine. Two reasons: the subscription structure is unusually fragmented, with individual features gated behind separate recurring licenses so the real cost balloons past the sticker price; and SonicWall has had a bad stretch of security incidents, including a breach affecting cloud backup configuration files and repeated actively-exploited SSLVPN vulnerabilities. If you already own TZ gear, keep it patched and rotate credentials; I wouldn't make it a new purchase. ([licensing complexity](https://www.itcentralstation.com/products/sonicwall-tz-pricing), [SonicWall's own TZ80 licensing post](https://www.sonicwall.com/blog/the-smartest-way-to-license-the-sonicwall-tz80)) **If you want one answer:** FortiGate 50G for a real office with an MSP or technical staff; UniFi Cloud Gateway Max if you want it to just work with no renewals. Prices above are list-ish as of late 2025/2026 and move around - worth confirming with a reseller, since street pricing on Fortinet and Sophos in particular is usually well below list. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
