The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest them: **1. Fortinet FortiGate (40F / 50G / 60F for small sites, 100F if you're bigger)** The default answer for most small businesses. Best raw performance per dollar, FortiOS is genuinely capable, and the FortiGuard subscription services (IPS, web filtering, AV) are mature. The 60F is the sweet spot for a 10-50 person office. Downsides: the UI has a learning curve, and licensing is where the real cost lives - budget for 3 years of FortiCare + UTM bundle, not just the box. **2. Sophos XGS (87 / 88 / 107 range)** My pick if you don't have an IT person. Far friendlier management than FortiGate, and Sophos Central gives you one cloud console. The XGS 88 actually beats the comparable FortiGate 50G on paper (9.9 Gbps firewall / 2 Gbps threat throughput vs 5 Gbps / 1.1 Gbps). It also pairs well with Sophos endpoint if you want firewall and laptops talking to each other. Slightly weaker on advanced/enterprise features. **3. Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway (Max, Ultra, or UCG-Fiber)** The value play. ~$200-400 one-time, **no recurring subscription**, and the UniFi controller is a pleasure to use. If you're under ~25 seats, have no compliance obligation (no PCI audit, no HIPAA, no cyber-insurance questionnaire demanding IPS), this is the lowest total cost of ownership by a wide margin. The catch: the IDS/IPS is Suricata-based and basic, support is community-forum-tier, and there's no real enterprise logging story. **4. SonicWall TZ series (TZ370 / TZ470)** Solid hardware, strong deep-packet inspection (RTDMI), widely resold so easy to get local support. I rank it below the first three mainly because SonicWall's recent track record on critical CVEs and the 2025 cloud-backup breach makes me more cautious than I used to be. Still a reasonable choice if you have a VAR who knows the platform. **5. Cisco Meraki MX (MX67 / MX68 / MX85)** The one I recommend when you have multiple locations and no on-site IT. Zero-touch deployment, excellent SD-WAN, everything cloud-managed. But it's 100% license-dependent - if the license lapses, the box stops forwarding traffic. Most expensive option here by a good margin. **6. pfSense Plus or OPNsense on a Netgate/Protectli box** Worth naming if you have someone technical. Netgate 2100 or 4200 gives you a supported appliance; OPNsense on a Protectli Vault is the DIY route. Enormous flexibility, near-zero licensing, but you own the configuration and the consequences. **Short version:** 10-50 seats with some IT help → FortiGate 60F. No IT help → Sophos XGS 88. Tight budget, small team, no compliance → UniFi Cloud Gateway Max. Multi-site → Meraki MX. One thing worth flagging regardless of choice: the appliance is maybe half the decision. Who patches it, and whether the threat-intel subscription stays current, matters more than which brand you buy - the common small-business failure mode is a good firewall left unpatched for three years. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
