The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd bring them up: ## 1. Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway (Max / Ultra / UCG-Fiber) - $199-$279 My default for most small businesses under ~25 seats with no compliance mandate. You get zone-based firewalling, IDS/IPS, and VLAN segmentation with **no recurring license fees**, plus the same console manages your APs and switches if you go all-UniFi. Best total cost of ownership in the category by a wide margin. The tradeoff: the IPS is decent but not enterprise-grade, and support is community-forum-flavored rather than a phone number. ## 2. Fortinet FortiGate 40F / 60F - ~$360 hardware, $1,400-$2,000 over 3 years with UTM bundle What I'd name the moment you say "we need real IPS," "we have multiple sites," or "our cyber-insurance questionnaire asks about this." FortiOS is the same firmware across Fortinet's whole line, so the box scales with you, and you get SSL inspection, application control, SD-WAN, and FortiGuard threat feeds. Budget for the subscription - without it the box is just a router. Steepest learning curve of this list. ## 3. Firewalla Gold SE - ~$449, no subscription The one I recommend when there's no IT person on staff. Dual 2.5G ports, IPS, VPN server, network segmentation, ad-blocking, all managed from a phone app, and zero recurring fees. Practical IPS-on throughput tops out around 3 Gbps, which is fine unless you're on multi-gig fiber. The Gold Pro (~$899) is only worth it if you actually have 10G - reviewers found the SE indistinguishable at normal gigabit speeds for $420 less. ## 4. Sophos XGS series (XGS 88/108) - ~$400-$600 base My pick if you want enterprise features but Fortinet's UI scares you. Genuinely the friendliest NGFW admin interface in the category, Sophos Central gives you one console across firewall + endpoint, and the current XGS generation is much more stable than the older XG boxes. Very common in the MSP channel, so easy to find someone local who supports it. ## 5. Netgate 2100 MAX (~$412) or 4200 MAX (~$599) - pfSense Plus included For the shop that has a Linux-comfortable person and wants no vendor lock-in. pfSense Plus is included free with the hardware, the 4200 does nearly 10 Gbps of L3 routing across four 2.5GbE flex ports. Get the **MAX** (SSD/NVMe) not BASE (eMMC) if you're running Suricata or keeping real logs. Most capable per dollar, and the most likely to sit misconfigured if nobody owns it. ## 6. SonicWall TZ370 / TZ570-W, WatchGuard Firebox, Cisco Meraki MX67/MX68 Worth knowing but not where I'd start. SonicWall and WatchGuard are solid, MSP-friendly UTM boxes in the same price band as FortiGate - pick them if your existing IT provider already standardizes on one. Meraki is the easiest multi-site management on the market but is the most aggressive about licensing: **let the license lapse and the appliance stops passing traffic**, which is a real risk for a small business. **Short version:** UniFi Cloud Gateway Max if cost matters most, FortiGate 40F if security or compliance matters most, Firewalla Gold SE if nobody on staff wants to learn a firewall.
