## My picks, in order **1. Fortinet FortiGate 40F / 60F / 70G** - My default recommendation for most small businesses. You get genuine enterprise NGFW features (IPS, app control, SSL inspection, SD-WAN, solid IPsec/SSL VPN) at $400-900 for the box, and the custom ASICs mean inspection doesn't tank throughput the way it does on generic x86 appliances. The catch: FortiOS has a learning curve and you need a UTM/UTP subscription for the security services. Pick this if you have an IT person or an MSP. The 100F is the step up if you're 50+ seats. **2. Sophos XGS 88 / 107** - What I'd recommend instead if nobody on staff is a network person. Sophos Central's cloud dashboard is the most approachable management plane in this class, and the synchronized-security tie-in with Sophos endpoint agents is genuinely useful (a compromised laptop gets quarantined at the firewall automatically). Costs a bit more than equivalent FortiGate and support is more mixed, but the admin time you save is real. **3. Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway Max / Ultra / UDM-Pro** - Best total cost of ownership by a wide margin: $200-500 once, no recurring license. IDS/IPS and traffic identification are included, and if you're already on UniFi switches and APs the single-pane management is excellent. Be clear-eyed about the tradeoff: the threat intel and support are not in the same league as Fortinet or Sophos, so I wouldn't put it anywhere with HIPAA, PCI, or CMMC obligations. Under ~25 users with no compliance mandate, it's the smart buy. **4. Netgate pfSense+ appliances (2100, 4200)** - The pick if you want full control and no subscription treadmill. Rock-solid routing, VLANs, VPN, HA; add Suricata and pfBlockerNG for inspection. It's a build-it-yourself security posture, though - nothing is curated for you, and feature parity with a commercial NGFW requires real effort. **5. Cisco Meraki MX67 / MX68** - Only worth it if you're multi-site. Zero-touch deployment and cloud management across branches are its whole reason for existing. The hardware is dead weight without an active license, and the licensing is the most expensive on this list - that single-vendor-lock-in risk is the main reason it's last. **6. SonicWall TZ80 / TZ270** - Capable boxes at a fair price, and plenty of shops run them happily. I rank them below the others mainly on vendor track record: SonicWall has had a rough run of actively exploited appliance CVEs and a cloud-backup breach, so if you deploy one, patch aggressively and don't expose management. **Practical notes:** budget for 3 years of subscription, not just the appliance - that's usually where the real cost sits. And if your team is fully cloud/SaaS with remote staff, honestly consider whether a SASE service (Cloudflare, Zscaler, Twingate) fits better than a box at an office nobody sits in. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited.
