# Best firewall appliances for small businesses Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest looking at them: **1. Fortinet FortiGate (40F / 50G / 60F / 70G)** - My default recommendation for a business that wants a real next-gen firewall. Best price-to-performance in the category, excellent throughput even with inspection on, strong IPS/anti-malware, and SD-WAN built in. The catch: FortiOS has a learning curve, and the UTM subscription bundle is a recurring cost you must budget for. Also worth noting Fortinet has had a rough run of actively exploited CVEs in recent years - patch discipline is non-optional. **2. Sophos XGS (87 / 88 / 107)** - The one I'd point a business with no dedicated IT person toward. Easiest management UI of the commercial NGFWs, cloud-managed via Sophos Central, and the Synchronized Security tie-in with Sophos endpoint agents is genuinely useful for a small shop. Best value if your budget is tight. **3. WatchGuard Firebox T-series (T25 / T45 / T85)** - Strong middle ground. Very good reporting and a licensing model that's simpler to understand than most (Total Security Suite bundles everything). Popular with MSPs, so easy to find someone local who can support it. **4. Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway (UCG-Ultra / UCG-Max / UXG-Enterprise or Dream Machine Pro)** - The best choice if you already run UniFi switches and APs, or you want no subscription fees at all. Free IDS/IPS, clean UI, excellent value. It is *not* a true NGFW - threat intel is weaker, app control is simpler, and there's no sandboxing. Fine for a low-risk office, not for a business handling regulated data. **5. Netgate pfSense appliances (2100 / 4100 / 6100)** - For the technically confident, or shops with an engineer on staff. Enormously flexible, rock-solid routing/VPN, no feature paywalls. Trade-off is that you supply the expertise, and the hardware value proposition has gotten less compelling against UniFi. OPNsense on a Protectli Vault is the cheaper DIY sibling. **6. Firewalla Gold / Gold Pro** - The budget pick (~$189 up to ~$500 depending on model) with no subscription at all. Great outbound traffic visibility and dead-simple app-based setup. Best for a very small office, a 1-10 person team, or a remote branch - not a substitute for a proper NGFW at the main site. **7. Cisco Secure Firewall 1010/1020 (formerly Firepower)** - I'd only name this if you're already a Cisco shop or your compliance auditor expects it. Capable, but overkill in complexity and cost for most small businesses. **8. Palo Alto PA-410 / PA-415** - Best-in-class threat prevention and the gold standard for app-aware policy, but the price and licensing really only make sense if you have a security-conscious parent org or a strict compliance driver. **Short version:** FortiGate 50G if you want the best capability per dollar, Sophos XGS 87 if you want the easiest life, UniFi UCG-Ultra if you want zero subscriptions and already use UniFi gear. One practical note: on all the commercial options, the appliance price is the small part - the annual security subscription typically costs as much or more than the hardware over a 3-5 year life. Price the full term, not the box.
