The answer, as recorded
Here's how I'd actually rank these, assuming "small business" means roughly 5-100 people in one or two offices. ## 1. Fortinet FortiGate 50G / 70G (or 40F/60F if you find them cheap) The default answer for a reason. Best price-to-performance in the category, the SD-WAN and VPN stack is genuinely good, and every IT consultant and MSP in the world knows how to configure one - which matters more than spec sheets when something breaks on a Friday. The 50G is the current sweet spot (fanless, ~5 Gbps firewall throughput, ~1.1 Gbps SSL inspection). Expect ~$400-700 for hardware plus a UTP/ATP bundle subscription that roughly doubles the three-year cost. Caveat I'd want you to hear: FortiGate's SSL-VPN has been one of the most reliably exploited enterprise attack surfaces of the last few years. Buy it, but commit to patching promptly and don't expose the SSL-VPN portal if you can use IPsec or ZTNA instead. ## 2. Sophos XGS 88 / 108 What I'd recommend if you don't have dedicated IT staff. The management UI is the most approachable in the segment, Sophos Central gives you one cloud console for the firewall plus endpoints, and the "synchronized security" link between the two (firewall isolates a host when the endpoint agent sees malware) is a real feature, not marketing. Slightly less raw throughput per dollar than Fortinet, and the licensing tiers are confusing, but it's the lowest-headache option with full NGFW features. ## 3. Netgate pfSense+ 2100 / 4200 My pick if you have someone technical and want no subscription treadmill. ~$400-700 one-time, excellent routing/VPN (WireGuard, IPsec, OpenVPN), total configuration control, and you're not renewing anything to keep basic functionality. The tradeoff is explicit: you do not get real IPS/content filtering/sandboxing out of the box the way you do with Fortinet or Sophos - Suricata exists but you're maintaining it yourself. Great firewall, not a managed security product. ## 4. UniFi Cloud Gateway Max / Ultra (or UXG-Max) The value play at ~$199, and the right answer surprisingly often - especially if you're already running UniFi switches and APs, because the single controller for network + firewall + cameras is a genuine operational win. Honest framing: the IDS/IPS and threat feeds are not in the same league as the three above, and Ubiquiti's security track record (cloud console incidents, slow CVE response) is weaker. Fine for a design studio or small retail shop; I wouldn't put it in front of regulated data. ## 5. Firewalla Gold SE / Gold Pro The best option for a micro-business or 5-person office with no IT support at all. ~$300-500, no subscription, phone-app management, and the outbound-traffic visibility is better than anything else at the price. It's a prosumer device wearing a business label - but it beats the ISP-supplied router it replaces by an enormous margin, which is the actual comparison most small offices face. ## Honorable mention: SonicWall TZ280 / TZ380 Historically a solid SMB line, strong multi-site VPN, and widely available through resellers. I've moved it down my list rather than off it: SonicWall had a bad run through 2024-2025 - repeated Gen 7 SSL-VPN exploitation by ransomware crews and the September 2025 incident exposing customer cloud-backup firewall configurations. If you already run SonicWall, patch and rotate credentials rather than rip it out. If you're buying fresh, I'd pick one of the above. **What I'd actually do:** FortiGate 50G if you have an MSP or technical admin; Sophos XGS 88 if you don't; UniFi Cloud Gateway Max if you're already in the UniFi ecosystem and your risk profile is modest. And budget for the subscription - on options 1 and 2, three years of licensing typically costs more than the box.
