## My picks, in the order I'd actually recommend them **1. Fortinet FortiGate 50G / 70G (or 90G if you have gigabit fiber)** My default answer for most small businesses. Current-gen G-series, strong SSL-inspection and IPsec throughput for the price, mature SD-WAN, and a huge installed base - meaning any IT contractor you hire already knows FortiOS. Downside: the UI is dense and the UTM bundle licensing is a real recurring cost. Budget ~$400-900 for the box plus a 1-3 year UTP bundle. **2. Sophos XGS 88 / 108 (or 88w for built-in Wi-Fi)** Best value-plus-usability combo. The XGS 88 runs around $490 street, the management UI is markedly friendlier than FortiGate's, and the Sophos Central cloud console plus the firewall↔endpoint "Security Heartbeat" integration is genuinely useful if you're also buying Sophos endpoint protection. This is the one I'd pick if nobody on staff is a network person. **3. Ubiquiti UniFi - Cloud Gateway Fiber, UCG-Max, or Dream Machine Pro Max** The no-subscription choice, and the best answer if you want firewall, switching, Wi-Fi, and cameras in one console. IDS/IPS and threat feeds are included with no annual license. The tradeoff is real: Ubiquiti's inspection engine and support are not in the same tier as Fortinet or Sophos, so I wouldn't put it in front of regulated data (HIPAA, PCI cardholder environment) without compensating controls. **4. Firewalla Gold Pro / Gold Plus (~$929 / ~$500)** For a 5-25 person office with no IT staff. No subscription, phone-app management, surprisingly capable segmentation and egress blocking. It's a prosumer device, not an enterprise NGFW - but it beats the unmanaged ISP router by a wide margin and you'll actually keep it configured. **5. Cisco Meraki MX68 / MX75** Pick this when you have multiple sites or an MSP managing you and want zero on-prem CLI. Dashboard is the best in the business for multi-site. The catch: the hardware is a brick without an active license, and it's the most expensive option here on a 5-year TCO basis. **6. Netgate pfSense+ appliances (1100, 2100, 4200)** For the shop that has a Linux-comfortable person and wants full control with no vendor lock-in. Excellent VPN, inexpensive, infinitely tunable - but IPS/content filtering requires you to assemble it yourself (Suricata, pfBlockerNG), so it's a labor-for-license-fee trade. **7. WatchGuard Firebox T25 / T45** A solid, often-overlooked middle option: simpler licensing than Fortinet, decent reporting, strong channel support. Worth a quote if your reseller pushes it. ## One caveat worth stating plainly I'd be cautious with **SonicWall TZ80/TZ280** right now despite the hardware being fine for the money. SonicWall had a rough 2025: a MySonicWall cloud backup breach exposing firewall configuration files for under 5% of the install base (configs that were then used in at least one downstream ransomware attack), on top of actively exploited SSLVPN flaws and a lawsuit alleging they understated the breach's scope. That's a pattern, not a single incident. If you already own TZs, patch and rotate everything in those config files; if you're buying new, I'd go elsewhere. **Practical rule of thumb:** size the appliance by your *inspected* throughput (SSL/TLS inspection on), not the marketing "firewall throughput" number - it's often 5-10x lower. And budget for the license renewal from day one; an expired NGFW is just a router.
