The answer, as recorded
Here's how I'd actually rank these, assuming "small business" means roughly 5-100 people with one or a few sites. ## My top picks **1. Fortinet FortiGate 50G / 70G / 90G** - the default recommendation, and what most IT shops will put in. Strong security effectiveness, mature SD-WAN, and the FortiGuard subscription bundles (IPS, web filtering, AV, sandboxing) are genuinely good. The 50G lands around $400-600 for hardware, plus a UTM subscription. Caveat worth knowing: FortiOS has had a run of serious, actively-exploited CVEs - buy it only if you'll actually patch it promptly. ([esecurityplanet.com](https://www.esecurityplanet.com/products/sophos-xg-vs-fortinet-fortigate/)) **2. Sophos XGS 88 / 108** - my pick if you don't have dedicated IT staff. The management UI is the friendliest in the category, the Sophos Central cloud console is good for multi-site, and "synchronized security" (firewall talks to the endpoint agent) is a real advantage if you also run Sophos endpoint. Generally cheaper at the licensing tier than Fortinet. Starts around $400-1,000 for the small appliances. ([esecurityplanet.com](https://www.esecurityplanet.com/products/sophos-xg-vs-fortinet-fortigate/)) **3. Netgate 4200 ($549) or 4200 MAX ($649)** - best choice if you have someone technical and want no per-feature licensing games. pfSense Plus on a 4-core Atom C1110 with four 2.5 GbE ports, IPsec/OpenVPN/WireGuard, multi-WAN failover. You own the config, there's no vendor cloud dependency, and 24/7 TAC Lite support is included. The trade-off: no built-in commercial IPS/malware subscription of the Fortinet/Sophos caliber - you're assembling that yourself. ([netgate.com](https://www.netgate.com/company/press-releases/4200-with-pfsense-plus-software)) **4. Ubiquiti UniFi - Cloud Gateway Fiber or Dream Machine SE** - excellent value if you're also buying UniFi switches and APs, because it's one console for the whole network. UCG-Fiber does 10G SFP+ WAN, 10 GbE RJ45, four 2.5 GbE LAN, ~5 Gbps IDS/IPS, zone-based and L7 firewalling, and 55,000+ signatures with CyberSecure. The UDM-SE is rack-mount and the better fit for an office closet. Honest caveat: Ubiquiti's security tooling is not at Fortinet/Sophos depth, and support is community-forum-grade. ([storagereview.com](https://www.storagereview.com/review/ubiquiti-cloud-gateway-fiber-review-10g-gateway-with-5gbps-ids-ips), [wundertech.net](https://wundertech.net/best-unifi-router-firewall/)) **5. Cisco Secure Firewall (Firepower 1010/1120)** - strongest raw security effectiveness in independent testing, and the right answer if you're already a Cisco shop or have a compliance auditor who likes the name. The management experience (FMC/FDM) is the worst of this list for a small team. ([business.org](https://www.business.org/it/cyber-security/data-security-tips-for-protecting-your-small-business/)) **6. Firewalla Gold / Gold Pro (~$189 and up)** - not a true NGFW, but genuinely the best option for a very small office or a one-person shop. No subscription fees at all, good outbound traffic visibility and device-level control, dead simple app-based management. Use it for a 5-15 person office where a FortiGate would just sit misconfigured. ([business.org](https://www.business.org/it/cyber-security/data-security-tips-for-protecting-your-small-business/)) ## One I'd steer you away from **SonicWall TZ series** still shows up on every "best SMB firewall" list, and historically it was a reasonable pick for remote offices with good site-to-site VPN. But between the 2025 cloud-backup configuration breach and sustained ransomware campaigns against SSLVPN on their devices, I wouldn't put one in new today unless you have a specific reason. ([business.org](https://www.business.org/it/cyber-security/data-security-tips-for-protecting-your-small-business/)) ## Short version If you have IT support: **FortiGate 50G**. If you don't: **Sophos XGS 88**. If you're technical and licensing-averse: **Netgate 4200**. If you're buying a whole network at once: **UniFi**. One thing that matters more than the box: budget for the subscription and for patching. An unpatched FortiGate is worse than a well-maintained Firewalla.
