## My actual recommendations, in order **1. Fortinet FortiGate 40F / 50G / 70G** - my default answer for a business that wants a real next-gen firewall. Best price-to-performance in the category, the hardware ASIC means inspection doesn't tank your throughput, and FortiOS gives you SD-WAN, IPS, web filtering, and SSL inspection in one box. The 50G is the current sweet spot for 10-50 users. Downsides: FortiOS has a learning curve, and licensing (FortiGuard UTP bundle) roughly doubles the sticker cost over 3 years. Also budget for the fact that Fortinet has had a steady stream of serious CVEs - you must stay patched and never expose the admin interface. **2. Sophos XGS 88 / 107** - what I'd recommend if you don't have dedicated IT staff. Same core NGFW feature set, but the management UI is genuinely the friendliest in the enterprise tier, and Sophos Central gives you one pane of glass if you also run their endpoint agent (the "Synchronized Security" tie-in is a real operational win). Slightly less raw throughput per dollar than Fortinet; starts around $400-$1,000 for the small appliances. **3. Netgate pfSense+ appliances (2100 MAX ~$400, 4200 for anything faster)** - best choice if you're technical and want to avoid subscription lock-in. Lifetime free software updates on the pfSense+ license, WireGuard/IPsec/OpenVPN, and the 4200 pushes 9+ Gbps of routing on four 2.5GbE ports. The tradeoff: IDS/IPS (Suricata) and content filtering are DIY add-ons, not a managed service - there's no vendor threat-intel subscription doing the work for you. **4. Firewalla Gold SE / Gold Plus / Gold Pro ($189-$900ish)** - the one I recommend most often to businesses under ~15 people with no IT person. No subscription at all; the purchase price includes updates. IDS/IPS, segmentation, VPN server, and ad-blocking all driven from a mobile app that a non-engineer can actually operate. Gold Plus (~$600, ~5 Gbps IDS/IPS) is the practical pick. Not an enterprise NGFW - no formal support SLA, no compliance-grade reporting - so it's wrong for regulated environments. **5. Ubiquiti UniFi (Cloud Gateway Ultra/Max, or UDM Pro Max ~$600)** - pick this if you're buying switches and APs anyway. One controller for the whole network is a huge day-two advantage, and there are no recurring license fees. Its IPS/IDS and threat feeds are meaningfully weaker than Fortinet's or Sophos's, and Ubiquiti's support is community-forum-grade. Fine for a design studio, not for a medical or financial practice. **6. Palo Alto PA-410 / PA-415** - the best inspection engine and App-ID policy model you can buy, period. I rank it 6th only because the cost and the admin skill it demands are hard to justify at small-business scale. Worth it if you have a compliance driver or an MSP managing it for you. **7. Cisco Meraki MX67 / MX68** - zero-touch cloud management, which is why MSPs love it for multi-site retail and clinics. Caveat worth knowing before you commit: the box is a brick without an active license. Renewal lapses mean the firewall stops passing traffic. **8. WatchGuard Firebox T25 / T45** - solid mid-tier alternative, strong channel/MSP support, good reporting for the price. Nothing it does better than the top three, but a reasonable second quote. **On SonicWall TZ (TZ80/TZ270):** it shows up on every "best SMB firewall" list and the hardware is fine, but I've moved it off my own list. 2025 was rough - including a breach exposing customer cloud-backup firewall configs and sustained ransomware exploitation of SSLVPN. If you already run one, disable cloud backups you don't need, rotate credentials, and patch aggressively. **Practical note:** for most 10-50 person offices, the real decision is just Fortinet 50G (if you have IT support) vs. Firewalla Gold Plus (if you don't). And compare 3-year total cost, not sticker price - subscriptions are where these diverge by 2-3x.
