Here's how I'd actually rank them for a startup, depending on where you sit: **1. Your cloud's native gateway - AWS API Gateway (or Azure API Management / Cloud Run + Apigee).** If your API already runs on Lambda/ECS/Cloud Run, start here. Pay-as-you-go, zero new vendors, IAM/WAF/observability already wired in. It's boring and that's the point - most seed-stage teams don't need a separate API management layer at all for the first year. The catch: no real developer portal on AWS (Azure APIM has one, but its Developer/Basic tiers get expensive fast for what you get). ([Moesif comparison](https://www.moesif.com/blog/technical/api-development/Top-API-Managers/), [G2 alternatives](https://www.g2.com/products/amazon-api-gateway/competitors/alternatives)) **2. Zuplo - if your API *is* the product.** Best fit for a startup shipping a public/partner API: edge-deployed, generates a docs portal straight from your OpenAPI spec, API-key management, rate limiting and monetization built in, free tier with no card and paid from ~$25/mo. Config-as-code with TypeScript policies, so it fits a small team's git workflow. Caveat on sourcing: most of the "best for startups" comparison articles ranking it #1 are published by Zuplo itself, so weight them accordingly. ([Zuplo's startup comparison](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/best-api-gateways-startups-2026), [pricing comparison](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/api-gateway-pricing-comparison-2026)) **3. Kong (Konnect or OSS).** The safe default once you have real traffic and more than a couple of services. Biggest plugin ecosystem, huge hiring pool, mature Kubernetes story, and it's been a Gartner MQ Leader / top of G2's Momentum Grid. Downsides for a startup: SSO and several governance features are gated behind Konnect Enterprise, and self-hosted Kong is real ops work. ([Kong on G2 rankings](https://konghq.com/blog/news/g2-leader-top-api-management-tools), [MQ Leader](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20221117005426/en/Kong-Inc.-Placed-in-the-Leaders-Quadrant-of-the-2022-Magic-Quadrant-for-Full-Life-Cycle-API-Management)) **4. Tyk.** The best value full-lifecycle option: open-source core, developer portal included rather than sold separately, transparent pricing, self-host or cloud. Pick it over Kong if you want portal + analytics + gateway from one vendor without an enterprise quote. SAML is on higher tiers. ([Zuplo pricing comparison](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/api-gateway-pricing-comparison-2026), [API7 gateway comparison](https://api7.ai/learning-center/api-gateway-guide/api-gateway-comparison-apisix-kong-traefik-krakend-tyk)) **5. Apache APISIX.** Best pure open-source gateway if you're going to self-host anyway: etcd-backed dynamic config (change routes with no restart), broad plugin coverage, external plugin runners, strong performance. Vendor-neutral ASF governance means no bait-and-switch on licensing. ([APISIX comparison](https://apisix.apache.org/learning-center/open-source-api-gateway-comparison/)) **6. KrakenD.** Narrow but excellent: stateless, no database, ~70k req/s on one instance, and its response-aggregation feature is genuinely useful if you're fanning out to many backends for a mobile or SPA client. Config is declarative/static, so it's a poor fit if you need to add routes dynamically at runtime. ([API7 comparison](https://api7.ai/learning-center/api-gateway-guide/api-gateway-comparison-apisix-kong-traefik-krakend-tyk)) **7. Traefik.** Only if you're already on Kubernetes and want your ingress controller and gateway to be the same thing - service discovery and cert management come free. Don't reach for it outside k8s. ([daily.dev open-source roundup](https://daily.dev/blog/top-6-open-source-api-gateway-frameworks/)) **8. Apigee.** Deep policy/governance and analytics, but it's an enterprise buy: ~$20 per million analytics calls and billing tangled into GCP. Worth it only for a well-funded startup already standardized on Google Cloud, or one selling into regulated enterprises that ask for it by name. ([Kong vs Apigee](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/kong-vs-apigee-api-gateway-comparison-2026)) **Skip MuleSoft Anypoint** at startup stage - it rates well (4.5/5 on G2) but it's an integration platform priced for the Fortune 500. Two practical notes: add **Moesif or Treblle** alongside whatever you pick if you need API product analytics and usage-based billing - that's usually the actual gap, not routing. And if you're exposing an LLM or MCP endpoint, check AI-gateway support specifically (token-based rate limits, prompt guardrails, per-model routing); Kong, Gravitee, Tyk and Zuplo all ship something here now and it's the fastest-moving part of this category. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
