The question asked, verbatim: best api management platforms for startups
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Zuplo mentioned
Quick flag before the list: most of what ranks for this query is vendor content marketing - Zuplo's own "learning center" owns most of page one and unsurprisingly concludes Zuplo is best.
- AWS mentioned
Your cloud's native gateway - AWS API Gateway, Cloud Run + Apigee-lite, or Azure API Management
- Run mentioned
Your cloud's native gateway - AWS API Gateway, Cloud Run + Apigee-lite, or Azure API Management
- Apigee mentioned
Your cloud's native gateway - AWS API Gateway, Cloud Run + Apigee-lite, or Azure API Management
- Azure mentioned
Your cloud's native gateway - AWS API Gateway, Cloud Run + Apigee-lite, or Azure API Management
- IAM mentioned
AWS API Gateway is ~$3.50 per million requests with no platform fee, no seats, no contract, and it's already wired into IAM, Lambda, and CloudWatch.
- Kong mentioned
Kong - best if you're going self-hosted and have infra people
- Kong Gateway mentioned
Kong Gateway OSS is free and excellent, and Kong has been a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader six years running, furthest on completeness of vision.
- Tyk compared
Tyk - the open-source alternative to Kong
- Google mentioned
Apigee (Google Cloud) - only if an enterprise customer is asking for it
- Traefik mentioned
Traefik Labs / Gravitee - niche but legitimate
- Traefik Labs / Gravitee mentioned
Traefik Labs / Gravitee - niche but legitimate
- Gravitee mentioned
Traefik Labs / Gravitee - niche but legitimate
- MuleSoft mentioned
Worth knowing: MCP support for AI-agent consumers has become a real differentiator in the last year, and it's the one dimension where the newer edge-first vendors are genuinely ahead of Apigee and MuleSoft.
- Kong Konnect mentioned
- ERP Research - Kong Konnect pricing (https://erpresearch.com/erp-add-ons/api-management/kong/pricing)

The answer, as recorded
Quick flag before the list: most of what ranks for this query is vendor content marketing - Zuplo's own "learning center" owns most of page one and unsurprisingly concludes Zuplo is best. I've weighted toward pricing facts and the Gartner vendor list instead of those rankings. ## What I'd actually recommend, in order **1. Your cloud's native gateway - AWS API Gateway, Cloud Run + Apigee-lite, or Azure API Management** For most startups this is the right answer and the boring one. AWS API Gateway is ~$3.50 per million requests with no platform fee, no seats, no contract, and it's already wired into IAM, Lambda, and CloudWatch. If you're on AWS and your API is internal or serves a handful of partners, stop here - you don't have an API management problem yet, you have a routing problem. **2. Zuplo** - best fit if you're *selling* your API Genuinely strong for the "we need API keys, rate limits, and a developer portal by Friday" case. Free tier (100K requests/month, unlimited environments and API keys, no credit card), paid from $25/month, TypeScript for custom logic, config-as-code, edge deployment. The reason it keeps winning these listicles is partly SEO, but the product fit for early-stage monetized APIs is real. **3. Kong** - best if you're going self-hosted and have infra people Kong Gateway OSS is free and excellent, and Kong has been a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader six years running, furthest on completeness of vision. Two caveats: the OSS build drops the management UI, advanced analytics, OIDC, and enterprise plugins; and Konnect's pricing punishes microservices - roughly $105/month *per gateway service*, 1M requests included, then $200 per additional million, plus per-portal and per-published-API fees. Twenty services and that math gets ugly fast. Note also that the "10M calls/month free" figure floating around in search summaries doesn't match Kong's published Konnect terms - it's a 30-day trial, not a standing free tier. **4. Tyk** - the open-source alternative to Kong Open-source core, self-hostable, lighter operationally than Kong, and in the 2026 Gartner vendor set. Worth a look specifically if Kong's per-service billing is what's disqualifying Kong. **5. Apigee (Google Cloud)** - only if an enterprise customer is asking for it Ten consecutive years as a Gartner Leader, and the most complete product here. It's also priced per-environment *and* per-call, which means you can burn real money on a staging environment that serves nobody. Pick this when a large customer's procurement team requires it, not before. **6. Traefik Labs / Gravitee** - niche but legitimate Traefik if you're Kubernetes-native and already running Traefik as your ingress; Gravitee if event-driven/async APIs (Kafka, MQTT, webhooks) are a first-class part of what you expose. Both are in the 2026 Gartner assessment. **Worth knowing:** MCP support for AI-agent consumers has become a real differentiator in the last year, and it's the one dimension where the newer edge-first vendors are genuinely ahead of Apigee and MuleSoft. Also budget for the hidden line items - data egress, developer-portal licensing, and SSO upcharges routinely double a quoted price. My honest default: start on your cloud's native gateway, move to Zuplo the moment you need keys and a portal for external developers, and only consider Kong or Apigee when either infra scale or a procurement checklist forces it. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
