The question asked, verbatim: best api management platforms for startups
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- AWS mentioned
Your cloud provider's native gateway (AWS API Gateway, Azure APIM Consumption, GCP API Gateway) - This is the boring correct answer for most startups and I'd start here.
- Azure mentioned

- Cloudflare recommended
Cloudflare Workers / API Shield - The cost-efficiency winner by a wide margin, and my pick if you're not already deep in one cloud.
- Cloudflare Workers recommended

- Workers recommended

- Zuplo mentioned
Zuplo - Genuinely good fit for the "we're shipping a public, documented, rate-limited API as the product" startup.
- KrakenD mentioned
KrakenD - If you want self-hosted and you hate operating state.
- Kong mentioned
Kong - The incumbent, biggest plugin ecosystem, and the right call if you need a specific plugin that only Kong has.
- Postgres mentioned
Run it DB-less (declarative YAML) to avoid the Postgres dependency.
- Tyk compared
Tyk - Go-based, better perf than Kong in head-to-head benchmarks (~12K vs ~9K req/s single-threaded), strong developer portal, GraphQL federation built in.
- Apigee mentioned
Skip for now: Apigee.
- AWS/Azure/GCP mentioned
The short version: if you're already on AWS/Azure/GCP, use their gateway until it hurts.
- Moesif mentioned

## My actual recommendations, in order **1. Your cloud provider's native gateway (AWS API Gateway, Azure APIM Consumption, GCP API Gateway)** - This is the boring correct answer for most startups and I'd start here. Zero infra to run, pay-as-you-go, and it's already wired into your IAM, logging, and billing. AWS HTTP APIs are $1.00/million requests (use these, not REST APIs at $3.50/million - same thing 3.5x the price for features you probably don't need). The real cost trap is egress: ~$0.09/GB, which on payload-heavy APIs can exceed your request charges. **2. Cloudflare Workers / API Shield** - The cost-efficiency winner by a wide margin, and my pick if you're not already deep in one cloud. ~$0.30/million requests with *free egress*, plus 3M free requests/month permanently. One published comparison puts 10M calls + 95GB egress at $2.10 on Cloudflare vs $40.22 on AWS. Edge-deployed by default. Tradeoff: you're writing gateway logic as Workers code rather than configuring a product, and the "API management" layer (portal, lifecycle, analytics) is thinner. **3. Zuplo** - Genuinely good fit for the "we're shipping a public, documented, rate-limited API as the product" startup. Gateway config is TypeScript in Git, deploys to 300+ edge locations, free tier to 100K req/month, $25/month after. Caveat worth knowing: Zuplo's content marketing dominates search results for this question - nearly every "best API management platform 2026" listicle I hit was written by them. The product looks solid; just don't mistake the SEO footprint for independent consensus. **4. KrakenD** - If you want self-hosted and you hate operating state. Stateless by design: no database, no Redis, no etcd, just a declarative JSON config loaded at startup. Benchmarks around 50K req/s on 16 cores. Also the best of the bunch at response aggregation - fan out to three backends, merge, trim fields, return one payload. Free open source; enterprise from ~$1,000/month. **5. Kong** - The incumbent, biggest plugin ecosystem, and the right call if you need a specific plugin that only Kong has. Run it DB-less (declarative YAML) to avoid the Postgres dependency. But know the economics: Konnect Plus is ~$105/month per gateway service with 1M requests, then $200 per additional million. One TCO analysis puts year-one cost for 10 APIs at 5M req/month between $43K and $100K. Kong Enterprise starts around $3,000/month. **6. Tyk** - Go-based, better perf than Kong in head-to-head benchmarks (~12K vs ~9K req/s single-threaded), strong developer portal, GraphQL federation built in. The catch for startups is the pricing floor: Starter is ~$600/month for 5 APIs. The open-source gateway is free, but the dashboard, portal, and analytics - the parts you actually wanted - are commercial. **Skip for now: Apigee.** Excellent platform, wrong stage. Standard starts around $500/month, per-environment charges run $365-$3,431/month, and real deployments commonly land at $8,000-$25,000/month. Revisit when you have an enterprise API program and a procurement department. --- **The short version:** if you're already on AWS/Azure/GCP, use their gateway until it hurts. If you're cloud-agnostic and cost-sensitive, Cloudflare. If your API *is* the product and you want great DX fast, Zuplo. Don't buy Kong or Apigee at seed stage - the migration cost later is much lower than people fear, and you'll have better information about what you actually need. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
