The answer, as recorded
Worth flagging up front: a lot of the top search results for this query are Zuplo's own "learning center" comparison pages, which naturally conclude Zuplo wins. I've factored that in rather than repeating it. Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd consider them for a startup: **1. Your cloud provider's native gateway - AWS API Gateway, Cloud Endpoints/API Gateway, or Azure API Management (Consumption tier)** If you're already all-in on one cloud, start here. Pay-per-request, zero infrastructure to run, no sales call. AWS API Gateway is roughly $3.50/million requests on REST (cheaper on HTTP APIs); Azure's Consumption tier is similar. The honest tradeoff is portability and a weaker developer-portal/monetization story. For most startups pre-Series A, this is the right answer and the other nine options are premature. **2. Kong (OSS or Konnect)** The default if you want something cloud-agnostic and plugin-rich. Kong OSS is genuinely free and battle-tested; you pay in Kubernetes ops and engineering time. Konnect's managed tier starts around $105/month per gateway service with 1M requests, then ~$200 per additional million - which gets expensive fast at volume, and real enterprise features land in the $30-50k/year range. Pick it when you need a mature plugin ecosystem and multi-cloud/on-prem. **3. Tyk** Kong's closest competitor, written in Go, and generally friendlier on the open-source side - the full lifecycle suite (gateway, analytics dashboard, developer portal) is more usable without paying. Managed cloud entry has historically been quoted around $600/month. Good middle ground if Kong OSS feels like too much ops but Konnect feels overpriced. **4. Zuplo** Developer-first, programmable (TypeScript policies), deploys to edge, and has a generous free tier. It's the one I'd actually try if your API *is* the product and you want a polished portal + key management without running infrastructure. Smaller company and smaller ecosystem than Kong/Tyk - a real risk factor worth weighing, not a dealbreaker. **5. Cloudflare (Workers + API Gateway/API Shield)** Underrated for startups already behind Cloudflare. Rate limiting, auth, schema validation, and bot protection at the edge, bundled into pricing you may already be paying. Less "API lifecycle management," more "API protection and routing." **6. Apigee - I'd skip it** Deployments commonly run $8,000-$25,000/month plus environment and infra fees; even pay-as-you-go is ~$20/million calls on top of ~$365/month base environments. It's a strong enterprise product and a bad startup purchase. Revisit after you have enterprise customers demanding it. **Separately: Postman or Apidog** for design/testing/docs collaboration. These aren't gateways and don't replace anything above - but startups often discover that what they actually wanted was an API *workspace*, not API management. Apidog is the cheaper all-in-one alternative if Postman's per-seat pricing stings. The decision rule I'd use: single cloud → native gateway. Multi-cloud or on-prem → Kong or Tyk. API-as-product with a small team → Zuplo. Already on Cloudflare → Cloudflare. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
