The answer, as recorded

One upfront caveat on the research: nearly every "best API management platform 2026" search result is Zuplo's own learning-center content marketing - they've SEO'd that entire question space. I've weighted that accordingly rather than treating it as independent ranking. Here's what I'd actually name, in the order I'd name them: **1. Your cloud's native gateway first - AWS API Gateway, Cloudflare Workers, or Azure API Management** If you're already on a cloud, start here and don't buy anything. AWS HTTP APIs run about $1.00/M requests (REST APIs ~$3.50/M), with no separate platform fee. The real gotcha is AWS's $0.09/GB egress and no built-in developer portal. Cloudflare's advantage is unlimited egress with no transfer fees, which matters a lot if you serve large payloads. Most startups never outgrow this, and "we need an API management platform" is usually a premature conclusion. **2. Kong** - the default if you genuinely need a dedicated gateway. Open-source Kong Gateway is free and battle-tested; Konnect is the managed version. 60+ plugins, enormous ecosystem, easiest to hire for. The catch: self-hosting means running Postgres, and Konnect's pricing gets expensive fast - roughly $105/month per gateway service with 1M requests included, then ~$200 per additional million. Great free tier, painful scaling curve. **3. Zuplo** - the most startup-shaped of the dedicated vendors, caveats about their SEO aside. Free tier includes API key auth, rate limiting, and a developer portal with no credit card; paid starts at $25/month. Edge-deployed, config-as-code, and the developer portal out of the box is the thing AWS makes you build yourself. Smaller company, so weigh vendor risk. **4. Tyk** - pick this over Kong if you want batteries included. OIDC, OAuth2, mTLS, HMAC, and bearer auth all ship natively instead of as plugins, which means less assembly. Open-source core, and reviewers consistently rate it easier to set up than the alternatives (4.5/5 on G2 vs Kong Konnect's 4.4). **5. KrakenD** - the specialist choice. Stateless, no database, extremely fast, and built around response aggregation - ideal if your actual problem is fanning out to many microservices and merging results. Highest G2 rating of the group at 4.7/5. Narrower than the others; it's a gateway, not a lifecycle platform. **6. Apigee** - only if you're on GCP and have enterprise buyers demanding it. Charges both per-environment and per-call (~$20/M), which is structurally hostile to small volumes. Powerful, wrong price shape for a startup. **Skip for now:** MuleSoft and similar enterprise iPaaS suites. You'd be buying a full integration platform to put auth and rate limiting in front of one API. **One thing worth factoring in:** if you're exposing APIs to AI agents, check for Model Context Protocol support - it's become a real differentiator in the last year, and the newer vendors (Zuplo, Kong) are ahead of the cloud natives here. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
