## For a startup, here's my actual ranking **1. Your cloud's native gateway (AWS API Gateway, Cloudflare Workers/API Shield, Azure API Management Consumption tier)** - If you're already on AWS, start here and don't think about it. HTTP APIs are ~$1/million requests, no control plane to run, no vendor to negotiate with. The real costs are latency (5-15ms added for HTTP APIs, 15-30ms for REST APIs) and lock-in. For 90% of pre-Series-A startups this is the correct answer and the other options are premature. **2. Kong (Konnect for managed, Kong Gateway OSS for self-hosted)** - The default "real" API management choice. Broadest protocol support (REST, gRPC, GraphQL, WebSocket, Kafka, SOAP), huge plugin ecosystem, sub-1-2ms added latency, and a Leader in Gartner's MQ. The catch for startups: Konnect bills *per gateway service*, so a microservices-heavy architecture gets expensive fast. Run the OSS version yourself if you have anyone who can operate it. **3. Zuplo** - Genuinely good fit for early-stage, programmable (TypeScript policies), free tier includes API keys + rate limiting + dev portal, $25/mo paid tier, deploys globally in seconds. Caveat you should know: Zuplo runs an enormous SEO content operation, and a large share of "best API gateway 2026" listicles ranking it #1 are their own pages. The product is legitimately solid for startups; the consensus around it is manufactured. Judge it on a trial, not on the listicles. **4. Tyk** - The sweet spot between Kong OSS and enterprise pricing. Open source core, native GraphQL federation (better than Kong's plugin approach), full lifecycle management at a price a mid-size team can actually pay. Pick this over Kong if GraphQL federation is central to you. **5. Gravitee** - Worth knowing because it's a 2026 MQ Leader for the third year running and is strong on event-native APIs (Kafka, MQTT, webhooks) in a way most gateways aren't. Relevant only if you have async/streaming APIs, not just REST. **6. Traefik** - If you're Kubernetes-native and want the ingress controller and the API gateway to be the same thing. Newly added to the 2026 MQ. Lightweight, low ceremony. **Skip for now: Apigee and MuleSoft.** Apigee entry pricing runs $3,400+/month per region and pay-as-you-go can exceed $400k/year at scale; it also benchmarked far slower than Kong under load (~1,750 RPS vs ~54,250). It's an enterprise monetization platform - buy it when you have a partner-facing API business and a procurement team, not before. **One structural note:** if you're building anything AI-adjacent, check MCP (Model Context Protocol) support before committing - it became a real differentiator in 2026, and gateway choices made on REST-only criteria are aging badly. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
