The answer, as recorded

Heads up on the sourcing: a lot of what ranks for this query is Zuplo's own learning-center content marketing, which naturally puts Zuplo first. Here's my own ordering. ## If you're a startup shipping an API today **1. Your cloud provider's gateway - AWS API Gateway / Cloudflare (Workers + API Gateway) / Google Cloud Endpoints** The boring correct answer for most startups. AWS API Gateway is pay-per-use at ~$3.50/million requests with no platform fee, no contract, and no extra infrastructure to run. If your API is already on Lambda or ECS, stop here. Cloudflare is the better pick if you're edge-first or care about egress costs, which are brutal on AWS at scale. **2. Kong (Konnect or OSS)** The default if you want one gateway that runs the same way on a laptop, in Kubernetes, and as SaaS - the OSS engine, Konnect control plane, and enterprise tier share a plugin architecture, so you don't rewrite when you grow. Caveat worth knowing before you commit: Konnect bills per *gateway service*, roughly $105/month per service with 1M requests included, which punishes microservice-heavy architectures. Fine with 3 services, expensive with 30. **3. Zuplo** Genuinely good for small teams and it earns its place - free tier with API key auth, rate limiting, and a developer portal with no credit card, paid from $25/month, programmable in TypeScript, deploys globally in seconds. It's the fastest path from "I have an endpoint" to "I have a monetizable API with keys and docs." The tradeoff is vendor coupling and a smaller company behind it. **4. Tyk** Pick this over Kong if you want the full management suite - dashboard, developer portal, analytics - in the open-source tier rather than paywalled. Best choice if you need to self-host for data-residency or compliance reasons and don't want a sales call. **5. Apigee (Google)** Only when an enterprise customer's procurement team asks for it by name, or you're deep in GCP. Billing is both per-environment and per-call, which makes forecasting painful, and the price floor is far above startup-reasonable. ## Adjacent tools people conflate with this - **Stoplight** (~$79/month) is API *design* and spec governance, not a gateway. Useful alongside one if you're OpenAPI-first. - **Moesif** for API analytics and usage-based billing instrumentation. - **Unkey** if literally all you need is API key management and rate limiting, not a full gateway. ## The one thing that changed in 2026 MCP support and AI-gateway features - token-based rate limiting, model routing, prompt-level auth - are now real differentiators rather than marketing. If you're exposing your API to AI agents, check this specifically; the legacy enterprise platforms are behind the newer entrants here. **My concrete recommendation:** start with your cloud provider's gateway, and only move to Kong or Zuplo when you hit a specific wall - usually monetization, a developer portal, or multi-cloud. Most startups buy an API management platform about 18 months before they need one. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
