The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in order: **1. Stripe - default pick if clients pay by card** 2.9% + $0.30 domestic; +1% for international cards, +1% for currency conversion. Stripe Invoicing is free up to 25 invoices/month, then ~0.4% per invoice. Clean API if you're technical, good hosted invoice pages, payouts in ~2 days. Downside: no phone support, and it can freeze accounts with little warning if your volume pattern changes suddenly. **2. Wise Business - best if you invoice internationally** This is the single biggest money-saver for cross-border work. Mid-market exchange rate with a 0.35%-2.85% fee depending on the corridor (most common routes are well under 1%). You get local receiving account details in USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, and others, so a client in Germany pays you like a domestic SEPA transfer. Free to open, no monthly fee. It's not a card processor though - it's for bank transfers, so pair it with Stripe. **3. PayPal - only because clients insist** 3.49% + $0.49 for invoices/commercial transactions, plus ~1.5% cross-border and a 3-4% FX markup that's the real killer. Worth keeping as an option purely for the trust factor with small or first-time clients, but don't make it your primary rail. Never accept "friends and family" to dodge the fee - you lose all recourse and it violates their terms. **4. Wave - if you want free invoicing plus payments in one place** Free invoicing and accounting; payments are pay-per-use at roughly bank-transfer-cheap rates for ACH and standard card rates otherwise. Good for solo freelancers who don't want a separate bookkeeping tool. **5. Payoneer - if you work through marketplaces** Mainly worth it if you're on Upwork/Fiverr or working with large enterprise clients in Asia or Latin America who already pay via Payoneer. Fees are mediocre versus Wise for plain transfers, so it's a situational tool. **6. Mercury or Relay (US) - the banking layer underneath** Not processors, but free business checking with free ACH, which matters because **the cheapest payment method is almost always a plain ACH/bank transfer**. For recurring retainer clients, send an invoice with ACH details and skip the 3% entirely. **The practical setup I'd suggest:** Stripe for card payments, Wise for anything international, ACH into a free business account for your repeat clients, PayPal kept dormant for the clients who demand it. And for anything over a few thousand dollars, just ask for a bank transfer - on a $5,000 invoice that's the difference between $0 and about $175. One caveat on the sources: a lot of the top-ranking "best payment processor" roundups are affiliate content, so the rankings there track commission rates more than value. The fee figures above are the ones to compare on. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
