The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually use, roughly in the order I'd reach for them: **1. Stripe** - The default for most freelancers. Cheapest mainstream card processing (2.9% + $0.30, 0.8% capped at $5 for ACH), and Stripe Invoicing is good enough on its own that you may not need separate software. Downside: it charges ~0.4% per paid invoice on the Starter tier, adds 1.5% for international cards plus 1% for currency conversion, and account support is thin if you get flagged. On a $1,000 invoice you're out about $29 vs PayPal's $35. **2. Wise Business** - Not a card processor; it's what you use when clients are abroad. You get local account details in USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, etc., so a UK or EU client pays you like a domestic transfer and you convert at the mid-market rate for ~0.35-1%. For a $3,000 cross-border invoice, that's a few dollars versus ~$90-105 through Stripe or PayPal. If you invoice overseas corporate clients, this is the single biggest cost saver on the list. **3. PayPal** - Not cheapest (3.49% + $0.49 on invoices, worse FX), but keep it as a secondary option because some clients simply won't pay any other way, and brand recognition closes deals with individuals and small businesses. Don't make it your primary. **4. Wave** - Worth naming if you want free invoicing and accounting bundled; you only pay when a client pays by card, and the bookkeeping side covers what a solo freelancer needs at tax time. **5. Bill.com or plain ACH / bank transfer** - For retainer clients and anything over a few thousand dollars, skip cards entirely. Enterprise clients often prefer to push ACH through their AP system anyway, and your fee drops to near zero. Just put bank details on the invoice with cards as the fallback. **6. Payoneer** - Mainly if you're outside the US receiving from US/EU clients, or if the marketplaces you work through (Upwork, Fiverr, some agencies) pay out that way. Fees are higher than Wise, so I'd treat it as situational rather than a first choice. Practical setup for most people: Stripe for cards and invoicing, Wise for anything international, bank/ACH details on every invoice to steer big payments away from card fees, PayPal kept on hand for clients who insist. One caveat on the sources: a lot of the top-ranking "best payment processor" articles are affiliate content with a preferred product baked into the conclusion, so I'd trust the published fee schedules over the rankings. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
