The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually use, roughly in the order I'd reach for them: **1. Stripe** - my default recommendation for most freelancers. 2.9% + 30¢ domestic, and Stripe Invoicing is free to send with hosted payment pages, so you don't need a separate billing tool. Card, ACH (cheaper: capped around $5), Apple/Google Pay, recurring subscriptions, payment links you can drop into a proposal. The downside is it's a developer-flavored product and payouts are 2 days by default. **2. Wise Business** - the one to add the moment you invoice clients abroad. You get real local account details (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, and more) so an EU client pays a local SEPA transfer, not an international wire. Conversion at mid-market rate plus ~0.4-0.6%, versus the 3-4% FX markup Stripe and PayPal quietly take. On a $5,000 cross-border invoice that's a $150-250 difference. **3. PayPal** - not because it's cheap (3.49% + 49¢ on many transactions, plus FX markup) but because some clients simply won't pay any other way, especially smaller international ones. I'd keep it as a secondary option rather than the primary rail. **4. Payoneer** - the better pick than Wise if you're being paid *by* marketplaces and big platforms (Upwork, Amazon, ad networks) or if you're in a country where Stripe isn't supported. Weaker than Wise on pure FX cost, stronger on platform coverage. **5. ACH / bank transfer direct** - for recurring retainer clients in the US, the cheapest thing you can do is skip cards entirely. Stripe ACH or even a plain invoice with bank details on it. On a $5k/month retainer, cards cost you $1,700+/year for nothing. **6. Wave or Zoho Invoice** - if you want free invoicing software bolted on top. Wave's invoicing is free and the payment processing rates are comparable to Stripe's. Good when you don't want to pay for a practice-management tool. A note worth flagging: don't use Venmo/Zelle/Cash App personal accounts for client work. They're convenient and fee-free, but you get no chargeback protection, no proper paper trail, and Venmo's terms prohibit business use on personal accounts - people get frozen out. My practical setup for a typical freelancer: **Stripe for domestic invoicing + Wise for anything cross-border + PayPal as a fallback when a client insists.** Sources: - [Stripe vs PayPal vs Wise for Freelancers: Fees, Speed & Features Compared](https://invoicemonk.com/en/blog/stripe-vs-paypal-vs-wise-freelancers) - [Stripe vs PayPal vs Wise: Best Payment Processor for Freelancers](https://1099freelance.com/articles/stripe-vs-paypal-vs-wise-best-payment-processor-for-freelancers) - [Best Payment Processors for Freelancers in 2026: Stripe, PayPal, and More](https://1099freelance.com/articles/best-payment-processors-for-freelancers-in-2026-stripe-paypal-and-more) - [International Payment Fee Comparison 2026: PayPal vs Wise vs Payoneer vs Stripe](https://realfeecalc.com/international-payment-fee-comparison.html) - [11 Best Payment Methods for Freelancers (w/ Fee Comparison)](https://hostadvice.com/blog/how-to-make-money-online/best-payment-platform-for-freelancers/) - [Best Payment Methods for Freelancers in 2026 - FreshBooks](https://www.freshbooks.com/hub/payments/best-payment-methods-for-freelancers-in-2026-and-how-to-actually-get-paid-on-time)

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
