## What I'd actually use **1. Stripe - the default for most freelancers.** 2.9% + $0.30 on US cards, and Stripe Invoicing lets you send branded invoices with a pay-by-card link, auto-reminders, and ACH as a cheaper option (ACH is capped, so big invoices cost far less than card). No monthly fee for the basic invoicing tier. The main reason to pick it: it does the whole job - invoice, collect, reconcile - rather than just moving money. Downside is ~1% FX markup plus ~1.5% on international cards. **2. Wise Business - if any meaningful share of your clients are overseas.** Cheapest realistic path for cross-border money: roughly 0.35%-2.85% depending on corridor, at the real mid-market rate, with local account details in USD/EUR/GBP/AUD and more so clients pay you like a domestic transfer. Important caveat: Wise is a transfer-and-hold account, not an invoicing system - it won't create invoices, chase clients, or send reminders. Pair it with something else for billing. **3. PayPal - carry it, don't lead with it.** 3.49% + $0.49 domestic, plus a cross-border fee and a 3-4% FX markup, which makes it the most expensive mainstream option by a wide margin. But it's the most trusted brand globally and some clients (especially small international ones) simply won't pay any other way. Keep it as a fallback, not your primary. **4. Wave - if you want free invoicing and are price-sensitive.** Invoicing, recurring billing, and basic bookkeeping cost nothing; you only pay when a client pays by card (~2.9% + $0.60). Good fit for someone doing a handful of invoices a month who doesn't want a subscription. **5. Melio - US clients, US bank account, large invoices.** Free ACH transfers, no subscription. If you bill US companies $5k+ at a time, paying 2.9% on card is throwing away real money; ACH through Melio costs nothing. **6. Payoneer - if you're outside the US billing US/EU clients.** Roughly 0%-3% plus a small fixed fee, with receiving accounts in major currencies and solid withdrawal options in countries Wise doesn't serve well. Also the rails many marketplaces already pay out on. **7. FreshBooks or QuickBooks - if invoicing *is* the pain point.** You're buying time-tracking, expense capture, estimates, and tax-ready books, with payments bolted on at roughly Stripe-like rates. Worth the $20-35/month only once bookkeeping is costing you hours. ## The short version Stripe Invoicing + Wise is the combination I'd set up: Stripe handles billing and card collection, Wise handles anything cross-border and holds foreign currency so you're not force-converting at a markup. Add PayPal purely as a client-convenience option. One concrete thing worth doing regardless of platform: put ACH/bank transfer on your invoices as the preferred method and card as the convenience method - on a $8,000 invoice that's the difference between ~$230 in fees and near zero. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
