The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually use, roughly in the order I'd reach for them: **1. Stripe Invoicing** - my default recommendation for most freelancers. Free to send unlimited invoices on the Starter tier (no monthly fee), 2.9% + $0.30 on cards, and ACH at just 0.8% capped at $5 - so a $10,000 invoice paid by bank transfer costs you $5 total. Nudge clients toward ACH and your effective rate drops to near nothing. Downside: no real client/project management around it, and support is self-serve. **2. Wise Business** - the one to add the moment you have clients abroad. Free to receive local bank transfers, ~0.3-0.6% conversion at the mid-market rate, and local account details in USD/GBP/EUR/AUD so overseas clients pay domestically on their end. On a $5,000 international payment this typically saves $150-250 versus PayPal, which uses a retail FX rate with a 3-4% margin baked in. Pair it with Stripe rather than choosing between them. **3. PayPal** - keep it active, don't make it your primary. It's the most expensive of the three (3.49% + $0.49 on PayPal/Venmo invoice payments, 2.99% + $0.49 on cards) and has a reputation for abrupt account holds. But some clients simply won't pay any other way, and the brand recognition closes deals with nervous first-time clients. **4. FreshBooks or Bonsai** - if you want invoicing, expense tracking, time tracking, and payments as one system instead of bolting pieces together. You pay a monthly subscription and still pay card fees underneath (they're reselling Stripe/WePay rails), so this is a convenience-and-bookkeeping purchase, not a savings one. Worth it if you're hand-reconciling invoices today. **5. Plain ACH / bank transfer or Zelle for large domestic invoices** - unglamorous, and the one that actually protects your margin. A $5,000 invoice arrives as $5,000. For retainer clients you already trust, put bank details on the invoice and skip the processor entirely. One thing worth knowing: with card processing you're always paying for dispute risk you mostly don't have. Freelancers get chargebacks very rarely, so the cheapest setup is usually Stripe-for-convenience + ACH-by-default + Wise-for-anything-cross-border, with PayPal as a fallback you never promote. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
