## My short list, in the order I'd actually reach for **1. Wise Business** - the default if any of your clients are overseas. Mid-market exchange rate with no markup, local receiving account details in USD/EUR/GBP/AUD and others, so a client in Berlin pays a German IBAN and it just lands. Transfer fees run roughly 0.35-2.85% depending on the corridor. The catch: it's a receiving and holding account, not a billing system - no invoices, no card checkout, no payment reminders. Pair it with whatever you use to invoice. **2. Stripe** - the best balance if most of your clients are domestic and you want cards. 2.9% + $0.30 for online card payments in the US, +1% for international cards and another ~1% for conversion. Stripe Invoicing gives you branded invoices, hosted payment pages, and auto-charging for retainers, which is the part freelancers actually feel: fewer chase emails. Worth it if you bill the same clients monthly. **3. Direct ACH / bank transfer** - the one people skip, and it's usually the cheapest money you'll ever collect. For US-to-US work, ACH is free or near-free. **Melio** does free ACH with no subscription; **Wave** has free invoicing with pay-by-bank; many business checking accounts will do it natively. If a client is paying you $8,000, 2.9% on a card is $232 you donated for no reason - send bank details instead. **4. PayPal** - carry it as a secondary option, not your primary. 3.49% + $0.49 domestically plus a cross-border fee and a 3-4% currency markup makes it the most expensive mainstream choice, and it has a real reputation for freezing funds during account reviews. But some clients will only pay this way, and the brand trust helps close small first-time jobs. Keep it, don't route your main income through it. **5. Payoneer** - specifically if you work through marketplaces (Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon) or you're outside the US billing US clients. It's built for that flow and often the path of least resistance where Wise isn't supported in your country. **6. Bill.com** - only when you're invoicing enterprises. It plugs into their AP workflow, which means you get approved and paid on their rails instead of fighting a procurement portal. Overkill for everyone else. ## The practical setup Invoice with Stripe (or Wave if you want free), collect domestic payments by ACH, collect international ones into Wise, keep PayPal as the fallback. That combination keeps you near 0-1% on most of your income instead of the 4-8% that fees and FX markups quietly take. One caveat: published fee schedules move, and the numbers above are what the current sources show rather than something I verified on each provider's own pricing page today. Check the rate for your specific country and currency pair before committing. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
