The answer, as recorded
Quick framing note, because "order management" means two different things in retail and it changes the answer: for a shop with one to a handful of locations, what you actually want is a POS with strong inventory and order handling. A true OMS - software that routes orders across stores, warehouses and ship-from-store - only earns its cost once you're doing real omnichannel volume. Here's both, in the order I'd actually recommend them. ## For a single shop or small chain (most retail shops) **1. Shopify POS** - My default recommendation. Store and online sell from one inventory pool, which is the single biggest operational win for a shop that also ships. Order management, returns and exchanges, and buy-online-pickup-in-store all work without bolt-ons, and the app ecosystem covers almost any gap. $0-$89 per location/month on top of your Shopify plan; in-person processing around 2.4-2.6% + 10¢. Pick this unless you have a specific reason not to. **2. Square for Retail** - The right answer if you're price-sensitive or mostly in-person. The free tier genuinely runs a store (inventory, basic CRM, payments, online ordering) and you can operate on it for months before paying; Plus is $49/month and Premium $149/month per location. Hardware is cheap and the setup is same-day. Weaker than Shopify once ecommerce becomes a serious channel. **3. Lightspeed Retail** - Worth the premium specifically for inventory-heavy verticals: apparel with size/color matrices, bike and sports shops, jewelry, anything with deep catalogs and purchase-order workflows against vendor catalogs. $89-$289/month. It's overkill for a single register doing under ~$20k/month, and reviewers consistently rate its order management below Shopify's (3.6 vs 4.5 on Capterra's fit scoring). ## For multi-channel brands that have outgrown POS **4. Cin7** (Core for smaller operations, Omni for larger) - Inventory and order management across marketplaces, wholesale and retail, with 450+ integrations. Strong if you sell on several channels and hold real stock. Users find it less intuitive than the alternatives; budget for implementation help. **5. Brightpearl (by Sage)** - Built specifically for omnichannel retail and wholesale rather than adapted to it. Includes retail accounting, warehouse management and demand planning in the box, and rates higher than Cin7 Core on user satisfaction (G2 58.77 vs 49.8). My pick over Cin7 if you also do wholesale. **6. NetSuite** - Only once you need actual ERP: multi-entity, multi-currency, consolidated financials. The OMS module is capable, but you're buying a finance system with order management attached, and the implementation cost reflects that. ## Enterprise / true distributed order management **7. Manhattan Active Order Management** - The reference standard for order promising and dynamic routing at scale. If you're a chain orchestrating ship-from-store across dozens-plus locations, this is the one to beat. **8. Fluent Commerce** and **9. OneStock** - Lighter, faster-to-deploy alternatives to Manhattan, both strong on split shipments, store pickup and returns. OneStock is particularly popular with European and UK retailers. **IBM Sterling** and **Blue Yonder** round out the Gartner shortlist in this category. **My actual advice:** if you're a shop, start at Shopify POS or Square and don't shop in tiers 2 and 3. The most common expensive mistake in this category is buying an OMS to fix a process problem that a POS with clean inventory data would have solved.
