Pick the tier you're actually in - buying up is the most common expensive mistake here. ## If you're a physical shop with a small online presence 1. **Shopify POS (Pro)** - my default recommendation for most retail shops. It's the one system where in-store and online orders genuinely share the same inventory, customer, and order record, so BOPIS, ship-from-store, and exchanges across channels just work. POS Lite is bundled with any Shopify plan (~$39/mo); Pro is $89/mo per location and is the version you actually want for retail. 2. **Lightspeed Retail** - the better choice if you're inventory-heavy: deep purchase ordering, supplier/vendor management, variants, and multi-location stock control are stronger than Shopify's. Think apparel, bike shops, jewelry, anything with hundreds of SKUs and real vendor relationships. 3. **Square for Retail** - best when budget and simplicity matter most. Free tier, trivial setup, payments included. Caveat: shops routinely outgrow it once inventory or multi-location needs get serious, so treat it as a starting point rather than a destination. 4. **Clover** - worth a look mainly if your payment processor is pushing it or you want the hardware-first, app-marketplace approach. Generally I'd take Square or Lightspeed over it for retail specifically. ## If you're selling across marketplaces and your own site 5. **Linnworks** - the pick if most of your volume is Amazon/eBay/Walmart. This is the serious omnichannel tier. 10. **Aptos** - unified commerce built around treating each store as a fulfillment node; strong mobile-first POS.
