## Short version first If you're on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace (almost every small business is), you probably don't want a classic "gateway" anymore. A true SEG sits in front of your mail via MX record changes and adds a hop to maintain. The current approach is API-based: it connects to your tenant with OAuth, deploys in an hour or two, and can claw back a bad message *after* delivery - which matters because the worst attacks on small businesses (BEC, vendor invoice fraud, account takeover) are text-only emails with no payload that pass SPF/DKIM/DMARC cleanly. Here's who I'd actually look at, in order. **1. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 - start here, ~$2/user/mo** Check what you already own before buying anything. Defender P1 is included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, so a lot of small businesses are already paying for it and never turned on Safe Links, Safe Attachments, or anti-phishing policies. If you're on Business Standard, adding P1 is the cheapest meaningful upgrade available. It's not the best BEC detection on the market, but properly configured it's a solid floor and it's the baseline everything else layers on top of. **2. Abnormal Security - the best BEC/social-engineering detection, ~$3/user/mo** This is what I'd add on top of Defender if payment fraud or impersonation is your real worry. It builds behavioral baselines of who normally emails whom, with what tone and what banking details, and flags the deviation - so it catches the "hey, our wire instructions changed" email that has no link and no attachment. Pure API, no MX change. The tradeoff: pricing is quote-based in practice and it skews toward organizations with more than a handful of seats. **3. IRONSCALES - best fit if you have no security staff, transparent per-seat pricing** Frequently ranked first specifically for the small-business segment because of the three-click M365 setup and published pricing. Its distinguishing feature is user-reported phishing triage: employees click a banner to report, and the system auto-clusters and remediates across every mailbox that got the same message. That's genuinely useful when nobody's job title contains the word "security." It also bundles phishing simulation training. **4. Proofpoint Essentials - the best choice if you genuinely need a gateway, ~$3/user/mo** This is Proofpoint's SMB-packaged product, and it's the one I'd name if you want real MX-level gateway filtering - because you have on-prem Exchange, a mixed mail environment, or you want bundled email continuity so mail keeps flowing when M365 has an outage. Strong URL and attachment sandboxing, mature threat intel. It's usually sold through MSP partners, which is a plus if you have an IT provider and a minus if you want to self-serve. **5. Barracuda Email Protection - cheapest credible all-in-one, ~$2.66-$8/user/mo** Good value because the higher tiers bundle things you'd otherwise buy separately: backup, archiving, and incident response. Barracuda has deep MSP distribution, so if you work with an IT provider there's a good chance they already resell it. Detection is good-not-leading; you're buying breadth per dollar. **6. Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration (formerly Avanan) - ~$3.60-$6/user/mo** Inline API scanning that also covers Teams, Slack, SharePoint, and OneDrive. Worth a look if your sensitive conversations have migrated off email into chat, or if you already run Check Point firewalls and want one console. ## What I'd skip **Mimecast.** Excellent product, but it's an enterprise/compliance-archiving play with no published pricing and a heavier implementation. Unless you have a specific regulatory archiving mandate, it's the wrong shape for a small business. ## Two things worth more than the product choice Set up **DMARC at p=reject** with SPF and DKIM for your own domain. It's free, it stops people spoofing *you* to your customers, and no gateway does it for you. And whatever you buy, run it in detection-only mode alongside your current setup for two weeks before cutting over. Every vendor's demo catches everything; your actual mail is the only real test. --- A note on prices: the figures above are list/aggregator prices and move around a lot with seat count, term length, and partner discounts. Treat them as ballpark for shortlisting, not quotes. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
