The current approach is API-based: it connects to your tenant with OAuth, deploys in an hour or two, and can claw back a bad message *after* delivery - which matters because the worst attacks on small businesses (BEC, vendor invoice fraud, account takeover) are text-only emails with no payload that pass SPF/DKIM/DMARC cleanly. Here's who I'd actually look at, in order. **1. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 - start here, ~$2/user/mo** Check what you already own before buying anything. Defender P1 is included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, so a lot of small businesses are already paying for it and never turned on Safe Links, Safe Attachments, or anti-phishing policies. If you're on Business Standard, adding P1 is the cheapest meaningful upgrade available. It's not the best BEC detection on the market, but properly configured it's a solid floor and it's the baseline everything else layers on top of. **2. Abnormal Security - the best BEC/social-engineering detection, ~$3/user/mo** This is what I'd add on top of Defender if payment fraud or impersonation is your real worry. It builds behavioral baselines of who normally emails whom, with what tone and what banking details, and flags the deviation - so it catches the "hey, our wire instructions changed" email that has no link and no attachment. Pure API, no MX change. The tradeoff: pricing is quote-based in practice and it skews toward organizations with more than a handful of seats. **3. IRONSCALES - best fit if you have no security staff, transparent per-seat pricing** Frequently ranked first specifically for the small-business segment because of the three-click M365 setup and published pricing. Its distinguishing feature is user-reported phishing triage: employees click a banner to report, and the system auto-clusters and remediates across every mailbox that got the same message. That's genuinely useful when nobody's job title contains the word "security." It also bundles phishing simulation training. **4.
