Short version up front: if you're on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace (almost certainly you are), the classic MX-record "gateway" is usually the wrong buy in 2026.

- IRONSCALES mentioned
IRONSCALES - The one I'd point a business with no dedicated IT person toward.

Transparent per-user pricing, a genuinely three-click M365 install, and it bundles phishing simulation/training so you're not buying a second product (KnowBe4) to cover the human side.

Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (Plan 1) - Check this before buying anything.

The answer, as recorded
Short version up front: if you're on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace (almost certainly you are), the classic MX-record "gateway" is usually the wrong buy in 2026. API-based tools plug in via OAuth in minutes, need no DNS changes, and catch the thing that actually hurts small businesses - business email compromise and invoice fraud, not spam. Here's what I'd actually name, in order: **1. Check Point Email Security (formerly Avanan)** - My default recommendation for an M365 shop. API-based, sits inline-ish at delivery, strong phishing/BEC detection, and no MX cutover to coordinate on a Friday night. Pricing is quote-based, which is its main annoyance. **2. IRONSCALES** - The one I'd point a business with no dedicated IT person toward. Transparent per-user pricing, a genuinely three-click M365 install, and it bundles phishing simulation/training so you're not buying a second product (KnowBe4) to cover the human side. Also lets employees report suspicious mail and auto-remediates across every inbox that got the same message. **3. Barracuda Email Protection** - Best "one vendor, one bill" option, around $5/user/month at entry tier. You get filtering, impersonation protection, email continuity, encryption, archiving, and M365 backup in one package. If you'd otherwise buy three products, this is the value play. Detection is good, not best-in-class. **4. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (Plan 1)** - Check this before buying anything. If you're on Business Premium you already own it, and it's roughly $2/user/month to add to cheaper tiers. Enable it, turn on anti-phishing policies and Safe Links, and see whether your remaining problem justifies spend. Weakest against BEC specifically, since it's judging Microsoft mail with Microsoft signals. **5. Abnormal Security** - The strongest pure BEC/vendor-fraud detection on the list; it behaviorally baselines who normally emails whom about what. I rank it fifth only because pricing and sales motion skew toward larger orgs. If you wire money based on emailed invoices, move it to #1 and get a quote. **6. Mimecast** - Worth it specifically if you have a compliance or e-discovery requirement, because archiving and continuity are native rather than bolted on. ~$4.50/user/month entry. It's a real gateway, so budget for tuning. **7. Proofpoint Essentials** - The SMB-packaged version of an enterprise product, roughly $3-9/user/month by tier. Excellent threat intel behind it. I rank it last for small businesses because gateways reward a team that can tune them and punish one that can't - and Essentials is a stripped-down cousin of what earns Proofpoint its reputation. Two things that cost nothing and matter more than the product choice: get SPF, DKIM, and DMARC to `p=reject` (PowerDMARC or Valimail have free/cheap tiers if the DNS work is daunting), and require MFA on every mailbox. Most "the gateway failed us" stories are really unenforced DMARC plus a reused password. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
