The answer, as recorded

## Short version first For a small business on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, you probably don't want a classic *gateway* (the kind where you repoint your MX records). The market has moved to API-based tools that plug into your tenant in minutes, scan internal mail too, and don't advertise to attackers which vendor you use via a public MX lookup. I'd layer one of those on top of what's already built into your mail platform. **The ones I'd actually name, in order:** 1. **Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (Plan 1)** - start here if you're on M365, because you may already own it. It's roughly $2/user/mo as an add-on, and from July 2026 it's bundled into E3 rather than sold separately, so check your licensing before you buy anything else. Safe Links, Safe Attachments, anti-phishing. Not best-in-class against business email compromise, but it's the cheapest meaningful baseline and it's the thing most SMBs are leaving switched off. 2. **IRONSCALES** - my default *add-on* pick for a 10-200 person company. AI phishing detection, transparent per-user pricing, and a genuinely fast M365 setup. Its differentiator is user-facing: employees get banners and a one-click report button, and the system learns from reports across its customer base. Good fit when you have no dedicated security person. 3. **Abnormal Security** - the strongest pick specifically for BEC, invoice fraud, vendor impersonation, and account takeover - the attacks that have no malicious link or attachment and therefore sail past both Microsoft and traditional gateways. Behavioral baselining per sender/recipient. Around $3/user/mo at the low end. Choose this over IRONSCALES if your risk is money moving (finance, real estate, construction, professional services). 4. **Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration** (formerly Avanan) - similar API model, and it extends to Teams, Slack, and OneDrive/SharePoint, not just email. Worth it if you want one vendor across collaboration tools, or if you already run Check Point elsewhere. 5. **Proofpoint Essentials** - this is the one I'd name if you genuinely want a true gateway. It's the SMB-packaged version of a serious enterprise product, around $2-5/user/mo, and it includes email continuity (your mail keeps flowing if M365 has an outage) plus archiving options. Pick this if you're *not* on M365/Workspace, run your own mail, or need the archive for compliance. 6. **Barracuda Email Protection** - the value play, and the one most commonly sold through local IT providers. Decent coverage, competitive price, easy to get support for via a channel partner. Note that Barracuda's *Email Security Gateway* appliance line is the legacy product; you want the cloud Email Protection tiers. 7. **Guardz** - worth a look only if you're very small (under ~25 seats) and want email security bundled with endpoint, dark-web monitoring, and awareness training in one subscription rather than buying four tools. **Mimecast** I'd skip for a small business right now. The product is fine - strong impersonation protection, excellent archiving - but it's gateway-architecture, custom-quoted, and has pushed renewal increases reported at 25%+, which lands badly on a small seat count. ## What I'd do Confirm what your M365 license already includes, turn Defender on properly, then add IRONSCALES or Abnormal on top. That two-layer setup costs about $5/user/mo and covers both the malware/link side and the BEC side. Run any candidate in monitor-only mode for two weeks first - every vendor's demo catches everything; what matters is the false-positive rate on *your* mail. One caveat on the pricing above: the $3/user/mo-type figures come from aggregator sites, and real quotes in this category move a lot with seat count and term. Treat them as a starting point for negotiation, not a price list.
