The question asked, verbatim: best email security gateways for small businesses
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Microsoft mentioned
Quick framing first, because it changes the shortlist: if you're on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, you probably don't want a gateway in the classic sense (rerouting your MX record through a third party).
- Microsoft 365 mentioned

- Microsoft Defender mentioned
Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 (~$2/user/mo) - If you're on M365, start here, not with a third party.
- Defender mentioned

Avanan / Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration (~$3.60-6/user/mo) - My default add-on recommendation.
- Slack mentioned
Also covers Teams/Slack/OneDrive, which matters more than people expect.
- IRONSCALES mentioned
IRONSCALES - Strongest pick if your main worry is phishing that looks legitimate, and if you want end users in the loop.
- Proofpoint Essentials mentioned
Proofpoint Essentials (~$2-15/user/mo) - Worth a quote specifically because it's the SMB-packaged version of a serious enterprise stack, sold heavily through MSPs.
- Mimecast mentioned
Mimecast I'd deliberately put last for a business your size.

The answer, as recorded
Quick framing first, because it changes the shortlist: if you're on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, you probably don't want a *gateway* in the classic sense (rerouting your MX record through a third party). The market has largely moved to API-based tools that sit alongside the native filter. That's less to break, no mail-flow outage risk, and deploys in an afternoon. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 (~$2/user/mo)** - If you're on M365, start here, not with a third party. You may already own it (it's bundled in Business Premium). Safe Links, Safe Attachments, anti-phishing policies. It's genuinely decent now, and the honest answer for a lot of small businesses is "turn on what you're already paying for, configure it properly, and stop." Only add a second layer if you've got real exposure - wire transfers, client funds, regulated data. **2. Avanan / Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration (~$3.60-6/user/mo)** - My default *add-on* recommendation. API-based, sits inline with Microsoft/Google rather than in front of it, so a misconfiguration doesn't bounce your mail. Consistently the easiest to deploy of this group and transparently priced at SMB tiers. Also covers Teams/Slack/OneDrive, which matters more than people expect. **3. IRONSCALES** - Strongest pick if your main worry is phishing that *looks* legitimate, and if you want end users in the loop. The employee-reporting and auto-remediation loop is the best in class, and per-user pricing is published. Small-team-friendly admin experience. **4. Abnormal Security (~$3/user/mo at SMB tiers)** - The one I'd name specifically for business email compromise: fake invoices, vendor impersonation, "the CEO needs a wire today." It behaviorally baselines who normally emails whom about what, so it catches payment fraud with no malicious link or attachment to detect. If you move money by email, this is the category leader. **5. Proofpoint Essentials (~$2-15/user/mo)** - Worth a quote specifically because it's the SMB-packaged version of a serious enterprise stack, sold heavily through MSPs. If you already have an IT provider, they likely resell it and will manage it. Good URL defense and reporting. **6. Barracuda Email Protection (~$2.66-8/user/mo)** - Solid mid-market value, bundles backup and archiving, strong channel support. One caveat I'd want you to know: Barracuda's *on-prem ESG appliance* had a 2023 zero-day so severe the vendor told customers to physically replace the hardware rather than patch it. The cloud Email Protection product is a different thing - but don't buy the appliance. **Mimecast** I'd deliberately put last for a business your size. Excellent archiving and threat protection, but it's enterprise-priced with sales-contact-only quoting, and setup draws mixed reviews. Buy it if you have a legal-hold/archiving requirement driving the decision - otherwise it's over-bought. Two practical notes: get DMARC, SPF and DKIM set to `p=reject` before you buy anything - it's free and stops people spoofing *your* domain, which no inbound gateway addresses. And watch out for sites ranking these tools with suspiciously precise "top 5" lists; several results above are affiliate-driven, so treat the specific orderings as marketing and the price ranges as approximate. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
