In October 2025, Malwarebytes documented the "can you test my game?" campaign - fake itch.io-style pages spreading hidden loaders through compromised friends' DMs. PC Gamer reported a second Steam listing in one year hiding malicious code behind a fake demo link on a cloned developer site. itch.io bans impersonation but does not verify developers or their executables. Detection is the developer's job - and today it happens by accident.

What it watches

1. Lookalike pages - your title, capsule art (survives crops and recolors), or store description on domains outside your approved list.
2. Playtest-lure domains - freshly registered addresses carrying playtest/beta/free-download vocabulary near your title.
3. Near-name clones - your title or developer handle with one letter changed.
4. External flags - when Google Safe Browsing flags a candidate page, the finding cites that flag (we never make such claims ourselves).
