The answer, as recorded
"Subscription billing" splits into two different jobs for freelancers, so here's both - starting with the one most freelancers actually mean (billing clients on a monthly retainer). ## Billing clients on recurring retainers **1. Stripe Billing** - my default if you want the money side to just work. Create a subscription, send the client a payment link once, and they're auto-charged monthly forever with card-on-file, dunning, and failed-payment retries. 2.9% + $0.30 plus 0.7% for Billing. Weakest on "feels like an invoice" polish and bookkeeping, but strongest on actually collecting. **2. FreshBooks** - the best answer if you want invoicing + light accounting + time tracking in one place. Built for service work, so recurring invoices and auto-charge on a saved card are native rather than bolted on. $19/mo Lite (5 clients), $33/mo Plus (50 clients), $60/mo Premium. The Lite client cap is the thing that bites people. **3. Wave** - genuinely free, no trial clock, and it does recurring invoices with auto-pay. They make money on processing (2.9% + $0.60 card, 1% ACH). If your retainer billing is three clients and a monthly email, paying $33/mo for FreshBooks is hard to justify over this. **4. Zoho Invoice** - free forever including recurring invoices, and more capable than Wave on templates, multi-currency, and client portals. The free tier caps at 5 customers / under ~$20K/yr, and it gets more useful if you're already in the Zoho ecosystem. **5. Bonsai** - worth the $25/mo only if you want contracts + proposals + recurring billing as one workflow. Auto-charge needs Essentials or above. Overkill for pure billing; good for freelancers who hate the paperwork half of the job. ## Selling an actual subscription product **1. Stripe Billing** again - lowest fees, most control, but you own sales-tax/VAT compliance (or add Stripe Tax at +0.5%). **2. Paddle** - merchant of record, so global VAT/sales tax stops being your problem entirely. ~5% + $0.50, +2% international. The right trade if you're selling to customers in 30 countries solo. **3. Lemon Squeezy** - historically the nicest indie-maker experience and still fine, but I'd be cautious in 2026: it's being folded into Stripe Managed Payments, and support/product velocity have visibly slowed. Pick it knowing you may migrate. **My pick:** retainers with a handful of clients → Wave or Zoho Invoice (free, fine). Retainers where you want one tool for everything → FreshBooks Plus. Selling a subscription product → Stripe Billing, or Paddle if international tax compliance alone would eat your weekends. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
