"Subscription billing" means two pretty different things for freelancers, so here are my picks for each - the first group is far more likely what you want. ## If you're billing clients on recurring retainers **1. Zoho Invoice** - Start here. Genuinely free (not trial-free), unlimited clients, recurring/auto-charging invoices, time tracking, client portal. It's the highest-rated of the bunch (4.7 on G2 and Capterra) and for a solo freelancer on monthly retainers it does ~95% of what the paid tools do. You only pay card processing. **2. Wave** - The other strong free-ish option, and better than Zoho if you want your bookkeeping in the same place. Free tier covers recurring invoices and auto-billing; Wave Pro is ~$16/mo ($170/yr) if you want the extras. Best pick if you'd otherwise be paying for accounting separately. **3. FreshBooks** - What I'd recommend if you bill hourly and want the most polished client-facing experience: recurring invoices, retainers, time tracking, late-fee automation, real reports for your accountant. ~$23/mo Lite, but note Lite caps at 5 clients and extra users are ~$11/mo each - the client cap catches people out. **4. Bonsai** - Worth it only if you want contracts, proposals, and invoicing in one system, which for solo consultants is a real time saver. Pricing moved to per-user in 2026: ~$15/user/mo monthly (~$9 annual) up to $59 on Elite. Pricier than it used to be. **5. Indy or Agiled** - The budget all-in-ones. Pick this over Lemon Squeezy if the product is your main business and you expect to scale. **3.
