The answer, as recorded
Searched - worth flagging one thing up front: the generic "best SIS 2026" listicles rank **openSIS, Fedena, Infinite Campus, Alma**. Those are K-12/private-school products. They don't handle credit hours, degree audit, Title IV financial aid, or IPEDS reporting, so ignore them for a college. The real higher-ed SIS market is about eight vendors. ## What I'd actually name, in order **1. Workday Student** - my default recommendation for any institution making a net-new choice today. Named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner MQ for higher-ed SIS (second year running), with 200+ institutions on the journey, and it's the only product consistently *taking* share from everyone else. The real argument: if you already run Workday HCM or Financials, the student module shares one data model, which eliminates the integration layer that eats most SIS budgets. Caveat - implementations run 3-5 years and are expensive; Miami University started in 2024 and finishes Fall 2026. **2. Ellucian Banner** - the incumbent leader at ~24% share, and the safest pick for large, complex publics with heavy state and federal reporting. Deepest functional coverage, largest consultant and hiring pool, and most peer institutions run it so you can borrow solutions. The flip side is that it's a decades-old architecture with SaaS wrapped around it. **3. Ellucian Colleague** - the right Ellucian product for mid-size privates and community colleges. Lighter and cheaper to run than Banner, same vendor ecosystem. Note the drift: Ellucian has been migrating Colleague sites to Banner, so ask pointed questions about long-term roadmap commitment. **4. Populi** - the best answer for small colleges, seminaries, and single-purpose schools, roughly under 2,000 students. ~7% share and growing in that segment. All-in-one (admissions, registrar, billing, and a built-in LMS), flat transparent pricing, and unusually well-reviewed support. Deliberately not built for enterprise complexity - that's the trade, and for a small school it's the right one. **5. Jenzabar One** - solid for small-to-mid private nonprofits, ~11% share, strong bundling of SIS with CRM and retention tools. Share has been in slow steady decline, so push hard on roadmap and R&D investment in your diligence. **6. Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions** - ~10% share, holding steady. I'd say this for large publics already running it: it still works and sustaining it is defensible. I would not select it new, given Oracle's slow cloud path for student. **7. Anthology Student** - now an Ellucian product. Historically the strongest fit for career, proprietary, and non-term programs with heavy Title IV compliance, and it was gaining traction at larger institutions. Big caveat: Anthology went through Chapter 11 in October 2025 and Ellucian closed the acquisition of its SIS/ERP business on Dec 31, 2025, absorbing 260+ institutions. Ellucian has committed to maintaining the systems, but a product acquired out of bankruptcy by the market leader that already sells two competing SIS products is a roadmap risk. Get written long-term support commitments. **8. Unit4 Student Management, Tribal SITS:Vision, Classter** - only if you're outside North America. These fit UK, EU, and ANZ regulatory models that Banner and Workday handle awkwardly. **The practical read:** the Anthology acquisition means Ellucian now owns Banner, Colleague, PowerCampus, and Anthology Student - a large share of the market behind one vendor. That makes Workday the main source of genuine competitive pressure, which is a reason to put it in your RFP even if you expect to stay on Ellucian.
