Most of the "top 10 SIS" listicles you'll find rank K-12 products like openSIS, Fedena, and Infinite Campus at the top - those are not higher-ed systems of record and you should ignore those lists for this decision.

Workday Student - The one I'd put head-to-head with Banner if you're already a Workday HCM/Financials shop, or if you're willing to fund a genuine transformation.

Ellucian Colleague - Where I'd point a small-to-mid private college or a community college that wants functional depth without Banner's complexity.
- Oracle mentioned
Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions - Still ~10% of the market and still the right answer for very large public systems with heavy customization and in-house Oracle talent.

Unit4 Student Management or TechnologyOne OneEducation - Worth a look mainly outside the US (UK, Europe, ANZ), or for institutions already on those ERPs.

The answer, as recorded
## The honest short answer For a US degree-granting college, the real market is about five vendors. Most of the "top 10 SIS" listicles you'll find rank K-12 products like openSIS, Fedena, and Infinite Campus at the top - those are not higher-ed systems of record and you should ignore those lists for this decision. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Ellucian Banner (with Banner SaaS)** - The default choice for mid-size and large institutions, and the market leader at ~24% share in North America. It handles complex academic structures, financial aid, and state/IPEDS reporting better than almost anything else, and the integrator/consultant talent pool is deep. Ellucian was named a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for the second straight year in 2026, positioned highest in Ability to Execute. Downside: the underlying product is old, and "Banner SaaS" is largely managed hosting rather than a true multi-tenant rebuild. **2. Workday Student** - The one I'd put head-to-head with Banner if you're already a Workday HCM/Financials shop, or if you're willing to fund a genuine transformation. More than 200 North American institutions have selected it with nearly 100 live (LSU, UBC, WashU, Tallahassee State, Southern Oregon), and it's also a 2026 Gartner Leader. It's a real modern SaaS architecture with one data model across student, HR, and finance. Downside: expensive, long implementations, and historically thinner on edge cases in financial aid and continuing ed. **3. Ellucian Colleague** - Where I'd point a small-to-mid private college or a community college that wants functional depth without Banner's complexity. ~11% share. Pragmatic, well-understood, lower total cost than Banner. **4. Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions** - Still ~10% of the market and still the right answer for very large public systems with heavy customization and in-house Oracle talent. I rank it fourth only because Oracle's cloud successor path for Campus Solutions has been slow and ambiguous; buy it as a known quantity you'll run for a decade, not as a modernization play. **5. Jenzabar One** - Credible for small private colleges, with a decent integrated stack (SIS, advising, retention, advancement, fundraising). ~11% share but on a slow steady decline, so weigh roadmap risk. **6. Populi** - My pick if you're under roughly 2,000 students - small colleges, seminaries, art and career schools. True all-in-one SaaS (admissions, registration, billing, financial aid, LMS), transparent and genuinely affordable pricing, very little IT burden. It will not scale to a research university. **7. Unit4 Student Management or TechnologyOne OneEducation** - Worth a look mainly outside the US (UK, Europe, ANZ), or for institutions already on those ERPs. ## One thing that should change your shortlist **Be careful with Anthology Student (formerly CampusNexus).** Ellucian completed its acquisition of Anthology's SIS and ERP business on December 31, 2025, having been the winning bidder in Anthology's Chapter 11 bankruptcy - bringing 260+ customers over. Ellucian says it will continue maintaining those systems, but a product acquired out of bankruptcy by the market leader that already sells two competing SIS platforms is not where I'd start a new 10-year commitment. If you're an existing Anthology customer, your contract stands; start planning your migration conversation now rather than in three years. My general rule: pick Banner or PeopleSoft for scale and complexity, Workday for transformation, Colleague or Jenzabar for mid-size, Populi for small. And budget more for data migration and change management than for licenses - that's where these projects actually succeed or fail. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited.
