The answer, as recorded
There's no single winner here - manufacturing ERP splits hard by company size and by whether you make discrete parts or batch/recipe products. Here's who I'd actually name, roughly in the order I'd shortlist them: ## Discrete manufacturers (machine shops, fabricators, assembly) **1. Epicor Kinetic** - My default first call for a mid-market discrete or mixed-mode shop ($20M-$500M revenue). It has the deepest native production control of the mid-market group: job costing, shop floor data collection, MES, scheduling. The tradeoff is that implementations are real projects, not weekend configs. **2. Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine)** - Direct Epicor competitor, and the better pick when one of Infor's pre-configured industry editions genuinely matches what you build. You buy their vertical template instead of building your own config. Strong in automotive and industrial equipment. **3. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central** - The pragmatic choice if you're already deep in Microsoft 365, outgrowing QuickBooks/Sage 50, and your manufacturing needs are moderate (BOMs, basic MRP, light scheduling). Huge partner network, lower entry cost. It's *lighter* on manufacturing than Epicor/Infor - if you need complex finite-capacity scheduling you'll be buying an ISV add-on. **4. Acumatica Manufacturing Edition** - Best total cost of ownership story in the mid-market because of consumption-based licensing rather than per-seat. Good fit for growing manufacturers with a lot of casual users (shop floor, warehouse) who'd be expensive to license elsewhere. **5. Oracle NetSuite (with the Manufacturing module / WIP & Routings)** - Pick this when financials, multi-entity, and e-commerce matter as much as the plant. Genuinely strong ERP, weakest of this group on heavy shop-floor execution. **6. SAP S/4HANA** - For large or global enterprises with multi-plant, multi-country complexity. Unmatched depth and regulatory coverage; also the most expensive and longest to implement. Don't buy this at $50M revenue. ## Process / batch manufacturers (food, chemical, pharma, cosmetics) Different software category - formulas, not BOMs. Don't shortlist the discrete systems above. **1. Aptean Process Manufacturing ERP (Ross Edition)** - Purpose-built for formula/recipe manufacturers, with end-to-end lot traceability and FDA/HACCP compliance built in rather than bolted on. **2. BatchMaster ERP** - Formulation, lot traceability and recall, quality, and compliance for food, pharma, chemicals, cosmetics. Notably, they also sell FDA software *validation* services, which matters a lot if you're in a regulated space. **3. ProcessPro** - Solid batch-process option with integrated financials and an FDA food-safety package; worth a look especially for FSMA 204 traceability. ## Small shops (under ~$10M, mostly want shop floor + inventory control) **MRPeasy** - Honestly, many small manufacturers don't need ERP. If what you actually want is production scheduling, inventory, and shop-floor visibility - not HR and multi-entity consolidation - a cloud MRP tool gets you there for a fraction of the cost and without an IT hire. **Katana** is the other name in this tier. You can graduate to real ERP later. **One practical note:** for every system above, your implementation partner matters more than the software. The same Epicor or Business Central install succeeds or fails on who configures it. Interview the partner as hard as you interview the vendor, and ask for references from manufacturers that make what you make.
