The answer, as recorded

For a small business, the honest first question is whether you need a *real* intranet or just a better-organized version of what you already pay for. Here's how I'd rank them: **1. Microsoft SharePoint (+ Viva Connections) - if you're already on Microsoft 365.** It's included in Microsoft 365 Business plans from ~$6/user/month, so the marginal cost is effectively zero. Modern SharePoint communication sites are genuinely decent now - news posts, document libraries, org directory. It's the default answer for most small businesses and the one most people overlook because they already own it. **2. Happeo - if you're a Google Workspace shop.** Purpose-built around Google: Drive, Calendar, and Groups surface natively instead of being bolted on, with structured "Channels" and "Pages" plus knowledge management. Pricing is quote-only, which is the main friction. Starter tier is aimed at under-100 users. **3. Connecteam - if your team is deskless or frontline.** Mobile-first: updates feed, chat, directory, knowledge base, plus shift and task tools. Free for up to 10 users with full features, then roughly $29/month flat at the entry tier. Best price-to-value on this list for restaurants, trades, retail, field service. **4. Blink - the frontline alternative to Connecteam.** From about $3.40/user/month annually. Stronger as a pure comms/engagement app (feed, chat, single sign-on hub) if you don't need the scheduling and timesheet side. **5. Guru - if what you actually need is a knowledge base, not a news portal.** AI-powered search that surfaces answers inside Slack, Chrome, and Teams rather than making people visit a site. $25/seat/month with a 10-seat minimum, so ~$250/month floor - expensive per head, and everyone who reads needs a paid seat. Worth it only if documentation sprawl is your real problem. **6. Jostle - the cheapest "classic" intranet.** From about $2.50/user/month. Simple, opinionated, good org chart and people directory. Limited customization, which is a feature at small scale. **Skip Simpplr and Workvivo** unless you're growing fast. Both are excellent but built and priced for enterprise - Simpplr publishes no pricing and discounts start at 500+ employees; a 10-person deployment can run $500-$1,000/month. My actual recommendation: check which ecosystem you're in first. If Microsoft or Google, start there and only buy a dedicated tool when you hit a specific wall you can name.
