# Best domain registrars for small businesses **1. Porkbun** - my default recommendation for most small businesses. Low registration *and* low renewal prices (~$11/yr for .com), free WHOIS privacy, free SSL, and a genuinely pleasant control panel. Critically, it doesn't lock you into its own DNS or hosting, so you can point the domain at Squarespace, Shopify, Google Workspace, or whatever else you use. Renewals on tech TLDs (.io, .co, .dev) are notably cheaper than most competitors. **2. Cloudflare Registrar** - the cheapest option, period, because they sell at wholesale cost with zero markup (~$10.46/yr .com, and renewals never spike). Best if you're already using Cloudflare for DNS/CDN. Two real catches: you **must** use Cloudflare's nameservers (you can't point the domain elsewhere without transferring it out), and there's no email hosting - so pair it with Google Workspace or Fastmail. Also, you can't register a brand-new domain and move it in immediately; there's a 60-day transfer lock from your original registrar. **3. Namecheap** - the safe, boring, well-supported pick. Free privacy, solid support, huge TLD selection, and useful add-ons (email, SSL). The tradeoff is renewal pricing: ~$11 first year but ~$19/yr after, so over five years it's roughly $86 vs. Cloudflare's $52. Fine if you value the UI and support more than ~$7/yr. **4. Spaceship** (Namecheap's sister brand) - flat $9.98/yr register *and* renew on .com, with a cleaner modern dashboard. Newer, so less track record, but the pricing is honest and it's worth a look if you're starting fresh. **5. Dreamhost** - worth it only if you want domain + WordPress hosting + email in one bill from one vendor. You pay a bit more for the convenience; for a small business with no technical staff, that's often a reasonable trade. ## One thing to actively avoid **GoDaddy.** Beyond the long-standing complaints about upsells and high renewals, they rewrote their Universal Terms on **February 2, 2026** to declare their services "not intended for private, personal or household use" and reclassify all ~21 million customers as **business customers**. The practical effect is to strip consumer-protection rights (FTC rules and EU consumer law) from people using domains for blogs, hobby sites, and personal email. EU lawyers doubt the relabeling survives a challenge, but you shouldn't have to find out. ## Practical advice Ignore the first-year teaser price and compare the **renewal** price - that's what you'll pay for the next decade. Also: keep your domain at a registrar separate from your website host. If you ever want to leave your host, you don't want them holding your domain hostage. And turn on registrar lock plus 2FA, and make sure the registrant email isn't an address at the domain itself. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
