Here's who I'd actually point a small business to, in order: **1. Cloudflare Registrar** - My default recommendation if you're comfortable with a slightly technical dashboard. They sell domains at wholesale cost with zero markup (~$10.50-11.15/yr for a .com), free WHOIS privacy, and no upsell carnival. The catch: no email hosting, and you have to use Cloudflare's DNS. For a business that just needs a domain pointed at a website, that's a non-issue - and their DNS is the fastest in the business. **2. Porkbun** - Best balance of price and usability (~$10.35-11/yr for .com). Transparent renewal pricing, free WHOIS privacy, free SSL, genuinely good human support, and unlike Cloudflare it'll sell you email hosting and other add-ons if you want them. This is what I'd recommend to a non-technical owner who still wants honest pricing. **3. Namecheap** - The safe mainstream pick (~$10-11/yr .com, free WHOIS privacy). Solid interface, good API if you have a developer, huge TLD selection. One caveat: they advertise discounted first-year prices, so check the *renewal* rate before you buy - that's the number you'll pay for the next decade. **4. Spaceship** - Namecheap's newer sister brand (~$9.98/yr .com, and notably the same price at renewal). Cleanest modern UI of the bunch and increasingly my pick for someone who wants it to just feel easy. Smaller track record, which is the only reason it's not higher. **5. Hover** - Costs a few dollars more, and I'd still recommend it to someone who wants to buy a domain and never think about it again. No upsells at all, free WHOIS privacy, excellent support, clean separation between domains and hosting. Two things worth saying plainly: - **Skip GoDaddy and Network Solutions.** Low teaser prices, high renewals, aggressive upselling at checkout, and privacy that costs extra. Nothing you can't get cheaper and calmer elsewhere. - **Don't buy your domain from your website host.** Registering with Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, or your hosting company makes leaving them harder than it needs to be. Keep the domain separate - it's the one asset you want full control of. One correction to something you'll see in older "best registrar" lists: **Google Domains no longer exists.** It was sold to Squarespace in 2023, and those accounts migrated there. If a guide still recommends it, the guide is stale. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
