The answer, as recorded
## Short answer **Porkbun** for most small businesses, **Cloudflare Registrar** if you want the absolute floor on price and already use Cloudflare. ## The list, in the order I'd actually suggest them **1. Porkbun** - My default recommendation. ~$10-11/yr for a .com with *the same* renewal price, and WHOIS privacy, SSL, and email forwarding are included rather than upsold. The interface is friendly enough for a non-technical owner, and unlike Cloudflare you can point the domain at any nameservers you like - which matters the day you hire someone to build the site or move hosts. **2. Cloudflare Registrar** - True at-cost pricing (~$10.50-11 for .com), zero markup forever, no renewal bait-and-switch, and free DNS + CDN. The catch: you *must* use Cloudflare's nameservers, there's no bundled email, and you can't register every TLD there. If you're fine with that, it's the cheapest honest option in the market. **3. Spaceship** - Namecheap's newer, separately-accredited brand (own IANA ID, new codebase). Flat renewals (~$10/yr .com), free privacy, DNSSEC on by default, free email forwarding, and the best modern dashboard of the bunch. There's also a REST API and Terraform provider if your business has any technical ops. Downside: no phone support on domains, and it's under the same private-equity-backed group as Namecheap, so long-term pricing is less of a guarantee than Cloudflare's structural at-cost promise. **4. Namecheap** - The safe mainstream pick. Larger TLD catalog, real 24/7 support, free privacy, and easy bundling with hosting/email if you want one vendor for everything. You pay for that: ~$15 first year, ~$18 renewal on a .com. Worth it only if you value the support line and the one-dashboard convenience. **5. Dynadot or NameSilo** - Only if you're managing a portfolio (a dozen-plus domains, defensive registrations, brand variants). Both have proper bulk tools and low renewals; neither is pleasant for a first-timer. ## One thing to avoid **GoDaddy.** Setting aside the long-standing upsell-heavy checkout, in February 2026 they revised their Universal Terms of Service to classify essentially all ~21 million customers as "business customers" - including anyone registering a domain for "personal branding" or "reputation management." The practical effect is losing consumer-specific legal protections and moving disputes into commercial arbitration rules, which carry higher filing fees and, in some cases, exposure to GoDaddy's legal costs. For a small business this is a real, if unlikely-to-be-triggered, downside with no offsetting benefit. ## Two rules of thumb - **Judge on renewal price, not first-year price.** A $0.99 first year that renews at $22 is the standard trap. - **Keep your registrar separate from your web host.** If you ever have a billing dispute or want to switch hosts, you don't want the same company holding your domain hostage. One correction to something you'll see in older "best registrar" roundups that are still floating around: **Google Domains no longer exists** - it was sold to Squarespace in 2023. Any list recommending it is stale. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
