## My short list **1. Open Dental - my default recommendation for most independent practices.** Flat $199/mo per location for the first 12 months, dropping to $149/mo after (and $89/mo internationally) with no per-seat charge, unlimited users, and phone/chat/email support included. It has an open database and a genuinely open API, so you're never hostage to your vendor for reporting or integrations - a real problem with the legacy systems. Reviewers on G2 rate it easier to use, set up, and administer than both Dentrix and Eaglesoft, and prefer its support to Dentrix's. Caveat: it's server-based by default (cloud only via third-party hosting), and the UI is utilitarian rather than pretty. ([pricing](https://costbench.com/software/dental-software/open-dental), [comparison](https://www.g2.com/compare/dentrix-vs-open-dental-vs-eaglesoft)) **2. Curve Dental - best true-cloud option for a 1-5 location practice that wants modern.** It holds the highest satisfaction scores of the major players (4.6/5 across ~267 G2 reviews vs. 4.1 for Dentrix), with the strongest marks for quality of support and ease of administration. Charting, imaging, billing, patient engagement, and BI are in one hosted platform, so no server in the closet and no IT contract. You pay more per month than Open Dental and the data is less portable - that's the trade. ([G2](https://www.g2.com/compare/curve-dental-curve-dental-vs-dentrix)) **3. Dentrix (or Dentrix Ascend for cloud) - the safe institutional pick.** Henry Schein's platform has the deepest integration ecosystem; nearly every imaging sensor, intraoral scanner, and third-party add-on supports it first, and its insurance and billing functionality is the strongest in the category. Ascend is the cloud/iPad version and handles shared patient records, fee schedules, and coverage tables across sites. Buy it if your existing imaging hardware and your associates are already Dentrix-native; the costs are higher and less transparent than Open Dental's. ([Dentrix Ascend](https://dentrixascend.com/features/multisite)) **4. Eaglesoft - only if you're a Patterson shop.** Solid (4.2/5) and perfectly competent, but it's chosen because of a Patterson equipment and imaging relationship, not because it beats the three above on merit. Same small-practice focus, slightly behind Open Dental on usability. **5. Denticon (Planet DDS) - for multi-location groups and emerging DSOs.** Starts around $795/mo, and the reason is the architecture: every location runs off one centralized database, so you can standardize workflows, fee schedules, and reporting across sites and get real central visibility. Overkill below ~3 locations. **Dentrix Enterprise** is the equivalent pick for large, established DSOs. ([Planet DDS](https://www.planetdds.com/)) ## One thing I'd add regardless of which you pick Your practice management system is not your patient-communication system. Budget separately for a layer like **Weave** (texting, two-way phones, reminders, reviews) or **Dental Intelligence** (analytics, scheduling optimization, hygiene reactivation). Patients now expect online booking, text-first contact, and a clear upfront answer on insurance coverage - and none of the five above does that part as well as a dedicated tool bolted on. ([Weave](https://www.getweave.com/best-dental-practice-management-software-in-2023/), [Solutionreach](https://solutionreach.com/blog/what-makes-the-best-dental-practice-management-software-in-2026-a-feature-level-breakdown)) **If you want one answer:** a solo or two-doctor practice should run Open Dental; if you refuse to maintain a server, run Curve. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
