The answer, as recorded
## My ranked picks **1. Open Dental - my default recommendation for most independent practices** Open-source, extremely flexible, and by far the best value: a free tier exists, and server/cloud plans run roughly $129-$199 per month depending on configuration. Its real advantage is the open API - almost every third-party imaging, patient-communication, and AI-claims tool integrates with it, so you're never held hostage by your PMS vendor. Support has a strong reputation. The tradeoff: it rewards practices willing to configure things themselves, and the UI is functional rather than beautiful. **2. Curve Dental - best true cloud option for a single or small-group practice** Built cloud-native from the start (not a desktop product retrofitted), so no server to maintain, no backups to babysit, and access from anywhere. Includes imaging, charting, billing, and patient engagement in one subscription. Roughly $300-$600/month per practice. Pick this if you want someone else handling IT entirely. **3. Dentrix (and Dentrix Ascend for cloud) - the industry standard, safest hiring choice** Henry Schein One's Dentrix is the most widely deployed PMS in the US, which means any hygienist, associate, or office manager you hire has probably already used it, and every vendor integrates with it. Ascend is the cloud version with unlimited multi-location support and shared patient records. Expensive - commonly $500-$2,000/month, and Ascend is priced per location - and Henry Schein pushes you toward its own ecosystem. **4. Eaglesoft - if you're already a Patterson Dental customer** ~30,000 active users, 25+ year track record, and a genuinely simple interface. It makes the most sense when Patterson already supplies your equipment and imaging, since the integration and single point of support are the main draw. Otherwise Open Dental or Curve beat it on flexibility and price. **5. Denticon (Planet DDS) - for DSOs and multi-location groups** This is the one I'd name for 10+ locations. Centralized reporting, consolidated scheduling, and cross-location credentialing are built for the group model rather than bolted on. Overkill and overpriced for a solo practice. **6. Oryx - the interesting newcomer** Dentist-built, all-in-one cloud with the highest user ratings of the group (~4.9/5), and unusual in that clinical workflow and treatment planning drive the software rather than the front desk. Smaller company and a thinner integration ecosystem, so it's a bet - but worth a demo if you're greenfield. ## How I'd actually decide Don't compare sticker prices. Compare *total* cost: claim rejection rates, staff hours lost to clunky workflows, downtime risk, and - critically - **data conversion cost when you leave**. That last one is where Dentrix and Eaglesoft practices get stuck. Also verify your imaging sensors and CBCT are supported before signing anything; that's the most common deal-breaker discovered too late. Shortlist for a typical 1-3 chair practice: **Open Dental** vs. **Curve Dental**. Server-based control and low cost vs. zero IT burden. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
