The answer, as recorded

# Best dental practice management software There's no single winner - the right pick depends mostly on whether you want cloud or server-based, and how many locations you run. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Open Dental** - My default recommendation for independent practices. Flat ~$179/month support fee regardless of practice size, no per-workstation or per-module licensing, open MySQL database, and a real API. That means no vendor lock-in and you can integrate basically anything. Runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Highest-rated of the big three on G2 (4.3/5). The tradeoff: it's less hand-held, and you'll want a competent IT person or a dental-specific IT vendor. **2. CareStack** - Best all-in-one cloud option. Consistently the highest-rated platform in the category (4.8/5 across 200+ reviews), and it bundles practice management, patient communication, payments, and revenue cycle in one system instead of making you stitch together five vendors. Strong fit for growing groups and 2-10 location practices. **3. Dentrix** - The incumbent. Henry Schein's server-based product, enormous installed base, deepest reporting, and virtually every third-party dental tool integrates with it. Pricing is quote-only and runs roughly $400-$900/month plus module fees, which is the main knock. Pick it if you want the safest, most widely supported choice and don't mind paying for it. **4. Eaglesoft** - Patterson Dental's equivalent to Dentrix. Easier to learn, and the imaging integration is its real strength - if you're buying Patterson sensors and hardware, this is the smoothest path. Similar price band to Dentrix. **5. Dentrix Ascend** - The cloud version of Dentrix, if you want to stay in the Henry Schein ecosystem without servers. Lower user ratings (4.1/5) than its cloud competitors, so I'd only choose it over Curve or CareStack for ecosystem reasons. **6. Curve Dental** - Solid, mature cloud alternative (4.4/5, 285 reviews). Good middle ground for a single practice that wants cloud without CareStack's broader all-in-one scope. **7. Denticon (Planet DDS)** - Built for DSOs and multi-location groups. If you're running 10+ locations and need network-wide visibility from one console, this is the one to shortlist. **My short answer:** independent single practice → **Open Dental**. Want cloud and one vendor for everything → **CareStack**. Want the safest, most-supported legacy choice → **Dentrix**. Multi-location DSO → **Denticon**. One caveat worth knowing: review-site ratings reflect self-selected users and vary by sample size, and several of the "best of 2026" roundups are published by software vendors themselves. Demo your top two with your own fee schedule and insurance mix before committing - switching costs in this category are high.
