## Short answer **Open Dental** if you want the best value and control, **Dentrix Ascend** or **Curve Dental** if you want cloud with a big vendor behind it, **Denticon** if you're multi-location. Here's the reasoning, roughly in the order I'd actually recommend them: ### 1. Open Dental - my default recommendation for most independent practices Open-source-ish, extremely flexible, and by far the best price: **$199/month per location** for the first 12 months, dropping to **$149/month** after, covering up to 3 providers including support and updates. Its real advantage is the open API - almost every imaging system, patient-communication tool, and AI radiograph reader integrates with it, so you're never locked out of a third-party product you want. Downside: it's server-based by default (cloud hosting is via third parties), and the interface is functional rather than pretty. If you have any technical comfort or a good IT person, this is the one. ### 2. Dentrix Ascend - the safest cloud choice Henry Schein's cloud platform, launched 2014, carries the Dentrix workflow logic most dentists and front-desk staff already know, which makes hiring and training much easier. Syncs across locations, no server to maintain. Consistent complaint in reviews: **reporting is weak** - confusing, hard to generate, missing detail - and it still lacks some operational basics like eStatements and insurance eVerify. ~82% positive sentiment in user reviews. ### 3. Curve Dental - best cloud UX for a single or small-group practice True cloud-native, starting around **$349/month**. Bundles patient engagement, imaging, charting, billing, and business intelligence in one place, and is widely rated the top alternative to Eaglesoft. Costs more than Open Dental and is more of a walled garden, but staff tend to pick it up fast and you get real analytics out of the box. ### 4. Denticon (Planet DDS) - if you're a DSO or 3+ locations Built for network-wide visibility from one console: centralized scheduling, consolidated reporting, and standardized workflows across sites. Overkill and over-priced for a solo practice, but it's the category standard once you're managing multiple locations and need to compare them against each other. ### 5. Eaglesoft - only if you're already on it, or buying Patterson hardware From **$299/month**, ~30,000 active users, 25+ year track record. It's stable and genuinely easy to use, and tight with Patterson equipment. But it's legacy server architecture and development has been slow; I wouldn't pick it fresh in 2026 - I'd put the same money into Curve or save it with Open Dental. ### 6. Dentrix (classic, on-premise) - the incumbent you're probably migrating off Still the most recognized name in the US with the broadest feature set and strongest third-party ecosystem, and it works well for multi-provider offices wanting the industry standard. Pricing is quote-only, which usually means expensive. Fine to stay on; not what I'd choose for a new practice. ### Worth adding alongside, not instead of **Weave** or **Solutionreach** for patient communication (texting, recall, reviews, phones) - most practices end up bolting one of these onto their PMS because the built-in messaging is mediocre. **DentiMax** is a reasonable budget option if you want practice management and imaging from one vendor. ### If I had to pick one for a typical 2-3 chair independent practice Open Dental, hosted with a dental-specific cloud host, plus Weave for communications. You get cloud access, the lowest software cost in the market, and no integration lock-in. If nobody on your team wants to think about hosting at all, go Dentrix Ascend instead and accept that you'll export data to a spreadsheet for real reporting. **One caveat:** the market has split into "cloud-native" vs. "legacy with a cloud wrapper," and the 2026 differentiator is increasingly AI-assisted treatment planning and charting. Ask every vendor specifically what their data-export terms are before signing - migration cost, not license cost, is what traps practices for a decade.
