The question asked, verbatim: best code repository hosting for startups

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. GitHub mentioned
GitHub - this is the default and what I'd pick unless you have a specific reason not to.
  2. Series B mentioned
Critically, apply to GitHub for Startups: Series B or earlier gets 12 months of free Enterprise (20 seats) plus $10,000 in credits usable on Copilot, Advanced Security, and metered features, with year 2 at 50% off via a partner.
  3. Copilot mentioned
Critically, apply to GitHub for Startups: Series B or earlier gets 12 months of free Enterprise (20 seats) plus $10,000 in credits usable on Copilot, Advanced Security, and metered features, with year 2 at 50% off via a partner.
  4. GitLab mentioned
GitLab - pick this if you want one vendor for repos, CI/CD, security scanning, and issue tracking rather than stitching five tools together.
  5. Bitbucket mentioned
Bitbucket - only if you're already on Jira and Confluence.
  6. Jira mentioned
Bitbucket - only if you're already on Jira and Confluence.
  7. Confluence mentioned
Bitbucket - only if you're already on Jira and Confluence.
  8. Gitea mentioned
Gitea or Forgejo (self-hosted) - the right answer if you have a hard data-residency or sovereignty requirement, or you're cost-sensitive at scale with someone willing to own the box.
  9. Forgejo mentioned
Gitea or Forgejo (self-hosted) - the right answer if you have a hard data-residency or sovereignty requirement, or you're cost-sensitive at scale with someone willing to own the box.

The answer, as recorded

**GitHub** - this is the default and what I'd pick unless you have a specific reason not to. Team is $4/user/month (3,000 Actions minutes + 2GB storage per user), the free tier already gives unlimited private repos and 2,000 CI minutes, and the ecosystem advantage is real: every CI service, deploy platform, security scanner, and AI coding tool integrates with it first. Hiring is easier too - every engineer you interview already knows it. Critically, apply to **GitHub for Startups**: Series B or earlier gets 12 months of free Enterprise (20 seats) plus $10,000 in credits usable on Copilot, Advanced Security, and metered features, with year 2 at 50% off via a partner. That makes the "expensive" tier free for your entire runway-sensitive period. **GitLab** - pick this if you want one vendor for repos, CI/CD, security scanning, and issue tracking rather than stitching five tools together. Premium is $29/user/month annually, which looks steep next to GitHub's $4, but GitHub charges separately for much of what GitLab bundles (SAST/DAST, compliance features). GitLab also runs a startup program with free Ultimate licenses and 50K compute credits/month if you qualify. Its CI is still the most mature self-hostable pipeline engine if you ever want to move in-house. **Bitbucket** - only if you're already on Jira and Confluence. At $3.65/user/month it's the cheapest entry point, and the native Atlassian integration is genuinely better than any third-party Jira connector. Outside that case the ecosystem is thinner and I wouldn't choose it. **Gitea or Forgejo (self-hosted)** - the right answer if you have a hard data-residency or sovereignty requirement, or you're cost-sensitive at scale with someone willing to own the box. Both run comfortably in ~512MB RAM, which is why I'd name them over self-hosted GitLab CE (wants ~16GB and 8 vCPUs to boot comfortably). Gitea is MIT-licensed and the more GitHub-like of the two; Forgejo is the GPL community fork with independent governance, now shipping v15.0 LTS and running the Dutch government's code.overheid.nl. For most startups this is a distraction - you'd be spending engineering time on infrastructure instead of product - but the digital-sovereignty pressure in Europe is making it a legitimate choice there. One thing worth deciding early even though you didn't ask: whichever you pick, your CI/CD and secrets end up deeply coupled to it, so migrating later costs far more than the repo move itself. The $4-vs-$29 comparison matters much less than that lock-in. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
