The question asked, verbatim: best code repository hosting for startups
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- GitHub mentioned
GitHub - the default, and the right default for most startups.
- Copilot mentioned
Actions for CI/CD is included with a free-minutes allowance, and Copilot is integrated.
- Series B mentioned
The real kicker is GitHub for Startups (https://github.com/enterprise/startups) - Series B or earlier gets 20 Enterprise seats free for 12 months plus up to $10k in credits toward Copilot/Advanced Security, and ~50% off year two via partners.
- GitLab mentioned
GitLab - pick this if you want one tool instead of five.
- Bitbucket mentioned
Bitbucket - only if you're already living in Atlassian.
- Jira mentioned
If Jira is where your roadmap lives, the Jira↔branch↔PR linking is tight in a way the others can't match, and it's cheap (~$3.30/user/mo mid-tier, free for up to 5 users).
- Forgejo mentioned
Forgejo (or Gitea) self-hosted - for data-residency or cost-floor reasons specifically.
- Gitea mentioned
Forgejo (or Gitea) self-hosted - for data-residency or cost-floor reasons specifically.
- Codeberg mentioned
Forgejo is the community fork governed by Codeberg's non-profit (GPL since v9, v15 LTS now out);

The answer, as recorded
# Best code repository hosting for startups **1. GitHub - the default, and the right default for most startups.** Biggest ecosystem by a wide margin: every CI service, IDE, vendor integration, and AI tool assumes GitHub first. Actions for CI/CD is included with a free-minutes allowance, and Copilot is integrated. Free tier gives unlimited private repos; Team is ~$4/user/mo. The real kicker is **[GitHub for Startups](https://github.com/enterprise/startups)** - Series B or earlier gets 20 Enterprise seats free for 12 months plus up to $10k in credits toward Copilot/Advanced Security, and ~50% off year two via partners. Also the biggest hiring advantage: every engineer you interview already knows it. **2. GitLab - pick this if you want one tool instead of five.** Repos, CI/CD, container registry, issue boards, and security scanning in one product, which is genuinely less glue code than GitHub + a pile of add-ons. Its CI is still the best-designed of the three. Caveat worth knowing before you commit: pricing scales hard - Premium is ~$29/user/mo and Ultimate ~$99/user/mo, so a team that's free at 5 people gets expensive at 40. GitLab has its own startup/open-source program with free Ultimate licenses and compute credits for qualifying companies. **3. Bitbucket - only if you're already living in Atlassian.** If Jira is where your roadmap lives, the Jira↔branch↔PR linking is tight in a way the others can't match, and it's cheap (~$3.30/user/mo mid-tier, free for up to 5 users). Outside that case I wouldn't choose it - smaller ecosystem, fewer third-party integrations, and it's not where the industry's momentum is. **4. Forgejo (or Gitea) self-hosted - for data-residency or cost-floor reasons specifically.** Both run small teams on ~200-512MB RAM, so a $5-15/mo VPS hosts your whole setup, and they ship GitHub-Actions-compatible CI. Forgejo is the community fork governed by Codeberg's non-profit (GPL since v9, v15 LTS now out); Gitea is the commercially-backed MIT original. Worth it if you have EU/sovereignty requirements - the Dutch government runs Forgejo at code.overheid.nl for exactly this reason. Not worth it to save money: you're trading engineer hours for a few hundred dollars a year, which is backwards at a startup. **5. Codeberg - free, non-profit hosting, but open-source only.** No private commercial code, so it's not a company home; useful if you're publishing an SDK or OSS side of your product. --- **My actual recommendation:** go GitHub, apply to GitHub for Startups on day one. Choose GitLab instead only if you have a strong preference for integrated CI/CD and your headcount plan stays modest. Don't self-host unless a compliance requirement forces it. I couldn't corroborate it as a real, established platform, so I left it out rather than pass along a likely SEO-filler entry.

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
