Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. GitHub recommended
GitHub - my default recommendation for almost every startup.
  2. GitHub Actions mentioned
    Watch GitHub Actions minutes;
  3. GitLab mentioned
GitLab - pick this if you want planning, CI/CD, package registry, and security scanning in one product instead of stitching together five vendors, or if you need self-managed/on-prem for compliance reasons (fintech, health, government contracts).
  4. Bitbucket mentioned
Bitbucket - really only worth it if you're already committed to Jira and Confluence.
  5. Jira mentioned
Bitbucket - really only worth it if you're already committed to Jira and Confluence.
  6. Confluence mentioned
Bitbucket - really only worth it if you're already committed to Jira and Confluence.
  7. Gitea mentioned
Gitea Cloud / Forgejo - the self-hosted route, for teams with a hard requirement to own the box: air-gapped environments, data residency, or just avoiding Microsoft.
  8. Gitea Cloud / Forgejo mentioned
Gitea Cloud / Forgejo - the self-hosted route, for teams with a hard requirement to own the box: air-gapped environments, data residency, or just avoiding Microsoft.
  9. Forgejo mentioned

  11. Azure mentioned
Azure DevOps - niche but real: if you're a .NET shop with Azure credits, the free tier and Boards/Pipelines integration are hard to beat on cost.
  12. Azure DevOps mentioned
Azure DevOps - niche but real: if you're a .NET shop with Azure credits, the free tier and Boards/Pipelines integration are hard to beat on cost.
  13. Codeberg mentioned

The answer, as recorded

**GitHub** - my default recommendation for almost every startup. Unlimited private repos free, Team at ~$4/user/month, and the deepest ecosystem: every CI tool, deploy platform, security scanner, and AI coding agent integrates with it first. The practical argument is hiring - every engineer you interview already knows it, so onboarding cost is zero. Watch GitHub Actions minutes; heavy CI usage is where the bill actually shows up. **GitLab** - pick this if you want planning, CI/CD, package registry, and security scanning in one product instead of stitching together five vendors, or if you need self-managed/on-prem for compliance reasons (fintech, health, government contracts). Free tier is usable but caps at 5 users per namespace; Premium is ~$29/user/month, so it gets expensive fast at seed stage. Buy it for the integrated DevSecOps, not to save money. **Bitbucket** - really only worth it if you're already committed to Jira and Confluence. Standard is ~$3.65/user/month and the Atlassian integration is genuinely tighter than GitHub's. Outside that, its ecosystem and free CI allotment (50 build minutes) are the weakest of the three. **Gitea Cloud / Forgejo** - the self-hosted route, for teams with a hard requirement to own the box: air-gapped environments, data residency, or just avoiding Microsoft. Lightweight, fast, cheap (Gitea's managed offering runs around $9.50/user/month). The tradeoff is that you become the ops team for your own source of truth, which is a bad trade for most startups under 20 engineers. **Azure DevOps** - niche but real: if you're a .NET shop with Azure credits, the free tier and Boards/Pipelines integration are hard to beat on cost. Otherwise skip it, since momentum has moved to GitHub even inside Microsoft. **Codeberg** - only if your project is FOSS and you want a non-profit host. Not an option for commercial/private work. Short version: start on GitHub unless a compliance requirement or an existing Jira investment pushes you elsewhere. One caveat on the pricing above - list prices shift and some of these sources are aggregator blogs rather than vendor pages, so confirm current numbers on the vendors' own pricing pages before you budget. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
