The answer, as recorded
Here's my honest ranking. Note that a lot of the "best CI/CD 2026" listicles are SEO filler (one ranked Devtron #1, which is not a mainstream pick) - so I'm weighting my own judgment heavily and citing pricing where I verified it. ## 1. GitHub Actions - the default, and you should need a reason not to use it If your code is on GitHub, this is the answer ~80% of the time. Pipelines live next to your PRs and releases, the marketplace of prebuilt actions means you rarely write glue code, and hiring is easy because everyone already knows the YAML. Free tier is 2,000 Linux minutes/month on private repos, unlimited on public, then ~$0.006/min on standard runners with a $4/user/mo Team seat. The weak spots are real: slow default runners, clumsy monorepo/matrix orchestration, and secrets management that gets awkward at scale. ## 2. GitLab CI/CD - best if you want one integrated platform Pick this if you're already on GitLab or you want SCM + CI + registry + security scanning + deploys in a single tool instead of stitching five vendors together. The YAML is genuinely better designed than Actions' for complex pipelines (real `extends`, includes, DAG stages). Free tier is stingy at 400 compute minutes/month; Premium is $29/user/mo with 10,000 minutes. ## 3. Buildkite - best for fast-growing eng teams with heavy CI volume The model is: Buildkite hosts the control plane, you run the agents on your own EC2/GKE. $30/active user/mo sounds expensive next to GitHub's $4, but self-hosted compute costs you nothing beyond the seat fee, so once you're burning serious CI minutes it's often the cheapest option overall. Also the best story for monorepos and dynamic pipelines. Downside: you own the runner infrastructure, which means someone on your team becomes the build-infra person. ## 4. CircleCI - strong standalone option, especially for parallelism Best-in-class test splitting and parallelism, good Docker layer caching, SSH-into-a-failed-build debugging that's still better than competitors'. Generous free tier (30,000 credits/mo), then $15/mo base covering 5 users. It's lost ground to Actions on mindshare, and the 2023 breach left a mark, but it's a mature product. Pick it if your pain is slow test suites. ## 5. Depot - not a CI platform, but the cheapest fix for the most common problem If your complaint about GitHub Actions is "it's slow," don't migrate - add Depot. Drop-in faster runners and remote Docker builds with persistent cache; usually a one-line change to your workflow. Far less disruptive than a platform migration. ## Also worth naming - **Vercel / Netlify** - if you're shipping a Next.js/frontend app, their built-in preview deploys *are* your CD. Don't build that in Actions yourself. - **Argo CD** - free, open source, the standard for GitOps deploys *into* Kubernetes. Pairs with (doesn't replace) one of the above for CI. - **Dagger** - write pipelines as code in Go/Python/TS and run them identically locally and in CI. Good hedge against lock-in if you expect to switch platforms. **What I'd actually do:** start on GitHub Actions, add Depot when builds hurt, and only move to Buildkite if CI spend or monorepo orchestration becomes a named problem for a named engineer. Choosing a "better" CI platform on day one is near-universally premature for a startup. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
