  2. GitHub Actions mentioned
GitHub Actions - The default, and for most startups the correct one.
  3. Linux mentioned

  4. GitHub Actions + Depot mentioned
GitHub Actions + Depot or Namespace (runners) - Not a separate platform, a drop-in swap.

The answer, as recorded

For a startup, the honest answer is that this is a shorter list than the "20 best tools" posts suggest. Here's what I'd actually name, in order: **1. GitHub Actions** - The default, and for most startups the correct one. If your code is already on GitHub, your pipelines live next to your PRs, reviews, and releases with no extra vendor, no extra SSO bill, no extra on-call surface. The marketplace covers nearly every integration you'll want. Free plan includes 2,000 Linux minutes/month on private repos (public repos are free), then roughly $0.006/min on standard Linux runners, on top of a $4/user/month Team seat. The real costs show up later: macOS minutes are ~10x, and the hosted runners are slow - which is what the next entry fixes. **2. GitHub Actions + Depot or Namespace (runners)** - Not a separate platform, a drop-in swap. You change one line (`runs-on:`) and get much faster machines with real caching, usually at lower total cost than GitHub's own runners. Worth knowing about before you conclude GitHub Actions is too slow and migrate somewhere else. This is the single highest-leverage CI change most small teams can make. **3. GitLab CI/CD** - Pick this if you want SCM, CI, registry, security scanning, and deployment as one integrated product rather than assembled parts, or if you need self-hosting for compliance reasons. The YAML is cleaner than Actions' and the built-in container registry saves a dependency. The tradeoff is you're adopting all of GitLab, not just its CI. **4. CircleCI** - The strongest case is heavy test parallelism and a broad executor menu (including good macOS/iOS support). Performance plan is $15/month covering 5 users and 30,000 credits, then metered credits plus $15/seat beyond 5. Benchmarks put it around $0.08/job vs GitHub's $0.06. Choose it when your test suite is big enough that fan-out concurrency is the bottleneck. **5. Buildkite** - For when you have a platform-minded engineer and serious CI volume. $30/active user/month is a steep seat price, but the agents run on your own hardware, so compute beyond that seat fee is free. A small team burning enormous CI minutes can land far cheaper here than on any metered platform. Don't pick it if nobody wants to own a build fleet. **6. Vercel / Cloudflare Workers CI** - If you're a frontend or full-stack JS shop, the deploy half of CI/CD may already be solved by your host's preview deployments, and you only need Actions for tests. Don't build a pipeline you're not using. **7. Argo CD** - Only relevant once you're on Kubernetes. It's GitOps-based continuous *delivery* - declarative config, automated drift detection, free and open source. It pairs with one of the above for CI rather than replacing it. If you're not on k8s yet, skip it. **Who I'd skip:** Jenkins (the maintenance burden is a tax on a small team), and the newer AI-native entrants like Harness and Devtron that top vendor listicles - capable products, but they're solving platform-engineering problems you probably don't have at startup scale, and they add a vendor relationship where GitHub Actions adds none. **Short version:** Start on GitHub Actions. Add Depot or Namespace runners when builds get slow. Only move to Buildkite or CircleCI when you have a specific, measured reason that faster runners didn't fix. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
