The answer, as recorded
# CI/CD for startups - what I'd actually pick **1. GitHub Actions** - the default, and for good reason. If your code is on GitHub, this is the answer unless you have a specific reason it isn't. Config lives next to your code, zero infra to run, enormous marketplace of prebuilt actions, and free for public repos. It's the adoption leader at roughly a third of the market. Downsides: macOS minutes cost ~10x Linux, and the YAML gets ugly at scale. **2. GitLab CI/CD** - the pick if you want one tool instead of five. CI/CD, container registry, issue tracking, and security scanning are all native rather than bolted on via marketplace plugins. Flat $0.010/min regardless of runner OS with no multipliers, which makes budgeting predictable. Best fit if you're already on GitLab or want self-hosting as an option. **3. CircleCI** - the strongest non-bundled option. Genuinely generous free tier (~6,000 min/month), fast container-based builds, and better ergonomics than Actions for complex matrix/fan-out pipelines. Worth it if your builds are heavy enough that pipeline design actually matters, or if you want CI decoupled from your code host. **4. Depot / Blacksmith / Namespace** - not alternatives to the above, but drop-in replacement *runners* for GitHub Actions. Change one line (`runs-on:`) and get roughly 2-3x faster builds at lower cost than GitHub-hosted runners, thanks to bare-metal CPUs and colocated caching. Depot is strongest on container/Docker builds specifically. This is the highest-leverage, lowest-effort CI change most startups can make once builds start taking more than a few minutes. **5. Buildkite** - hybrid model: they host the control plane and dashboard, you run the agents on your own infra. Compute costs drop a lot and your code never leaves your environment. Pick this if you have GPU builds, unusual hardware needs, or compliance constraints - and someone willing to own the agents. **6. Jenkins** - still ~28% of the market, and I'd mostly steer startups away from it. Infinitely customizable via plugins, but you're paying for it with a server to patch and a plugin graph that breaks. Only justified if you already have Jenkins expertise or genuinely exotic pipeline requirements. **Short version:** start on GitHub Actions free tier, add Depot or Blacksmith runners when builds get slow, and only consider migrating platforms if you hit a real wall - not before. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
