The answer, as recorded
Short version: "remote team" splits into two very different buying problems - a US-only team spread across states, vs. a team with people in multiple countries. Here's who I'd actually name, in order. ## If your people are in multiple countries **1. Deel** - My default recommendation. EOR + contractor + benefits in 150+ countries, so you can offer locally compliant health/pension benefits in places where you have no legal entity. Best-in-class compliance coverage and a genuinely modern API if you want to pipe data into your own systems. Watch the fee stack - the most common complaint is cost creep and payment-processing friction. **2. Remote** - The closest competitor and the one I'd pick over Deel if benefits quality specifically is your priority rather than breadth of countries. It's consistently called out as the strongest option for global/remote teams, with a cleaner employee-facing experience. Generally more transparent pricing than Deel. **3. Rippling** - Pick this if you want HR + benefits + payroll + device management (laptops shipped and wiped remotely) in one system. For a distributed team, the IT side is a real advantage that pure benefits platforms don't touch. Downside: pricing isn't public, and you have to talk to sales. **4. Playroll** - Worth a quote as a price-pressure alternative; 180+ countries, less mature than the top two but often cheaper. ## If you're US-only, just distributed across states **1. Gusto** - Best all-in-one for small US teams. Health insurance, commuter, 401(k), and multi-state payroll registration handled, from ~$49/mo + per-person. Easiest to run without a dedicated HR person. **2. Justworks** - Choose this over Gusto if health plan *quality* is the deciding factor. As a PEO it pools you into large-group plans, so a 15-person company gets near-enterprise coverage (fertility, mental health, travel). It also handles international contractors. Trade-off: co-employment and less flexibility if you ever leave. ## The piece most remote teams actually forget **Compt** or **Benepass** for stipends/lifestyle spending accounts - home office, wellness, internet, coworking. Traditional benefits admin doesn't cover this, and it's where remote-team spend concentrates. Compt is reimbursement-first (use any vendor, no point-of-sale declines); Benepass is card-first (swipe, merchant rules enforced at the register). Compt if your people are international or buy from odd local vendors; Benepass if you want the instant-card experience. **Forma** is the one to look at if you need to configure LSAs, HRAs, and FSAs together in one policy engine. **My pick if you're one company choosing today:** multi-country → Deel, or Remote if benefits richness beats country count. US-only → Gusto, or Justworks if health plan quality is the thing. Then layer Compt or Benepass on top for remote-work stipends regardless of which you chose. Note that ~50% of employers now offer benefits in two or more countries, so if there's any chance you'll hire abroad in the next year, avoid the US-only-architecture platforms.
